I'd be happy to challenge all 170$ 380 owners with my 960 card for 170$
Got mine for $165 with 2 GB which should have been it's launch price in my opinion, though it seems to have sold well regardless. Solid performance, and not so terribly expensive that it would hurt a lot to sell it (or put it into an htpc) when the next gen comes along (depending on performance gains). Considering I'm gaming on a 720P tv though, I doubt I would need to upgrade for quite awhile.

Price aside, it is quite impressive that it compares at all to the Tonga R9 380 GPU considering the latter should have far more compute and bandwidth resources than the GM206-based GTX 960. I'd wager that DX12 will probably allow Tonga to stretch it's legs a bit though. Some DX12 benches I've seen let even Pitcairn close the gap between it and the 960. It's pretty easy to tell where Nvidia made their trade offs.

Maybe a 950 would be more than enough for my needs. I am not looking for an all bells and whistle card to be honest.

and your playing dum too? its called direct x 11 driver overhead...

The problem with your assessment is you are assuming he is going to be CPU bottlenecked most the time. There is a small difference at times with the driver over head of AMD and Nvidia, but it's not a big difference. Unless you find yourself CPU bound, the difference isn't seen at all.

The only reason he should be CPU bound a lot, is if he turns down settings for super high FPS. While some might play that way, most don't.

I'm not playing dumb. Without relevant benchmarks, you're just assuming the effect of it. Weren't you one of the ones defending the 970's memory issue because benchmarks showed that it performs as expected?

He will be with any title that requires 2 cores and that's plenty of titles today..

This coming from Mr. "2GB wil be enough for 1080p for the forseeable future"?

So the best IPC CPU out there is not enough for amd driver overhead? Quit trolling.

Personally i wouldn't go bellow GTX960/R9 380. If you want a cheaper alternative, the R9 380 2GB starts from 129 pounds and it will be fine for you 1680x1050 Monitor.
DX-12 games will be very heavy on the GPU and GTX950 will be way under power real soon.

"Overall, this is a topic that needs more exploration on a wider variety of CPUs. It's not so easy to test because sequences need to be found that specifically target CPU load, and historically benchmarking runs concentrate very much on GPU performance. Our range of test processors is limited, but we have confirmed similar behaviour by lowering clocks and disabling two cores on an i7 on an entirely separate PC. In the here and now, we'd say that if you're an i3 owner considering a graphics card upgrade, the established GPU hierarchy might not work for you in choosing the best possible product. To give some idea of the extent of the issue, this is the moment where a GTX 750 Ti outperforms a significantly more powerful R9 280 in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in gameplay conditions where 1080p60 at PS4 quality settings is the target."

" indications suggest that those with lower power CPUs may be better off with the Nvidia card even if the AMDs are notionally more powerful, "

You do understand that this review was made on January 2015 on what it is now an 11 months old drivers ??

Do we have any evidence that the R9 380 have performance issues with Core i3 on the new Crimson Driver ??

Erenhardt already posted a current "overall performance" chart which is showing the 280x with a substantial lead over the 960.
But that is not addressing the problem in question (if the relative performance remains the same when used with a dual core CPU).

Eurogamer hasn't directly compared the 280x (or 380x) vs 960 on slower CPUs, but this is their review for Skylake i3s.

Note that it seems more and more games are getting mileage out of faster RAM speeds than they used to, it seems Fallout 4 is still an outlier in how big of a deal it is, but not in the fact that RAM speed makes a noticeable impact.

Maybe the question is better, do you have fast enough RAM to handle a small amount of extra overhead? Look at Ryse -- Going to slightly slower RAM halves the frame rate! It could be that the so-called AMD driver bottleneck is RAM related in addition/instead of CPU related? The issue certainly could use more data... I'm going to start a separate thread on this to not clog this one.
