So Fry's has the i3 7100 on sale for $95 with no tax. Is it worth getting this CPU over the Pentium G4560??

The Pentium is around $65 or so? The i3 has 400mhz higher base clocks and AVX2; but is that worth $30 or so? Not to me personally.

Maybe not worth it over a G4560, but for $5 more than a G4600, I would say yes. Although, does the i3-7100 have the HD610, or the HD630? The G4560 has the HD610, the G4600 has the HD630.

The usual question: what are you going to be using the computer for? If it is just light use, office tasks, surfing the web, etc., probably not needed or worth it. For gaming, the extra clock speed might be. It is still under a hundred dollars, after all, and quite a bit cheaper than an i5.

Edit: I mean gaming with a dgpu. I would not pay 30.00 extra for the 630.

I got G4600 CPUs for my DeskMini units, and even with dual-channel 2x8GB DDR4-2400 SO-DIMMs, they still don't seem as fast, for web browsing, with Adata SX8000 M.2 PCI-E NVMe 128GB SSDs, as the PC I threw together last night, with a G4400 and a single 4GB DIMM of 2133, and a SATA 2.5" Radeon R3 120GB SSD, of which I've found to be pretty fast. Also, I had thrown on Win10 Insider Edition build 15042. So, possibly that was the difference, too.

i3s are a waste of time. Go cheap and get a Pentium or stop being so tight and pick up an i5. The middle ground is a wasteland.

Ordinarily, I would agree with you... but when the i3 can be had for the price of two Pentiums below it (very nearly), and the Pentium below that, can't be found for sale at anything resembling MSRP, then the i3 doesn't look that bad of a choice.

Top shelf locked i3 7300 @ 4.0GHz

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117733

Is $150

Top shelf locked i5 7600 @ 3.9GHz all cores, 4.1GHz single core:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117729

is $230

$80 against the life of a PC is irrelevant.

Umm, read the OP?

G4600 goes for $90 on ebay and Newegg. G4620 goes for more, and the i3-7100, more still.

Getting the i3-7100 for $95 is a Good Deal, IFF you were in the market for a G4600. And the G4560's availability is still spotty here.

like @VirtualLarry, i'd go G4560 if one can be found. at the prices in this thread, might as well get the i3 from fry's. half the price of an i5 and barely more expensive than the pentiums.

It's kind of wierd how the G4560 still has "shortages". Either the demand is INSANELY high, or something else is going on... like Intel limiting supply of the cheaper Pentiums, to try to drive potential customers to more expensive CPUs, to prevent cratering ASPs.

I mean, the G4560 is a supremely good deal, the higher Pentiums and i3s, not so much. At least as far as performance/$ goes, not absolute performance.

Even the lower Skylake G4400 is pretty decent, I'm on one of those now. But the HyperThreaded G4560 for the same or lower price is a better deal. If you can find one, that is.
