Yes. A 6700k will be 30-50%+ faster clock for clock. Even for games. The difference may be even greater at times.

But that shouldn't stop you from getting a 290 for your 2500k. A slower GPU would be slower still with your CPU as well.

I remember Kali and Kahn and Descent ... -Lt You

2500k will work fine (especially with overclock) but newest chips are ahead after inching forward 5-10% multiple generations now.

I can cap out at 60 fps on my 4.5 ghz 2500k in the majority of games with a 290, but certain games do suffer from the CPU (Fallout 4 is the big one here).

At 3.3 ghz you are probably running into that bottleneck a lot more often.

I would definitely suggest overclocking. Those 2500ks are insanely easy and friendly to overclock. With my current one I could just turn the multiplier to 40, and change nothing else, and it was 100% stable. Getting to 4.5 took a little more doing but really hardly that much at all. There are plenty of guides out there.

No reason to have a 2500k without overclocking.

There are very few games that this will be your bottleneck, especially depending on your resolution, but there are a few. I would give it a little bump, do some research dont use any motherboard autooverclock.

Depends on the game, level and if single or multiplayer. For example Battlefield is easily CPU limited in 64 player maps. Luckily you can use mantle in BF4 with the 290 to help with this issue. But not possible in other games.

Yeah, push it to 4GHz on stock voltage or 4.5GHz for an easy to manage OC, there's lots of headroom in these CPUs.

Such an OC'd 2500k is fine for a 290, it's difficult to come across a game that doesn't keep it pegged at 100% GPU usage (FO4 among some) at 1080p.

Yup, agree with the others. Overclock that beast, it's easy. I'm at 4.5Ghz on my 2500k at about 1.316 volts using the "offset voltage" option.

Took me about a week to get there as I was fine tuning but worth it. Nothing else to do in these cold, dark, new england winters.

When the i5 2500K came out in 2011 it was such an unprecedented improvement over the gen before it that stores and OEM builders were always short on this still magnificent chip.

Yes, the i7 6700K is about 35% faster but you're talking about a 4 generation gap.

Keep your 2500K but you must overlock it as high as possible so that even a 980Ti SLI won't be a bottleneck.

I've got my i5 2500K to 4.9GHz. It's as fast as a stock i7 6700K.

This.

I'm also OC'd to 4.5...and I ended up with a negative offset of -0.020!! According to cpu_z, my vcore runs between 1.256 to 1.304 depending on load (mostly between 1.256-1.264) and for idle, drops as low as 0.960. Took my around a week also along with a nice little spreadsheet to keep track of my changes, and results!, along the way.

2500K @ 4.3 Ghz here default voltage. I can go to 4.5 stock but see no need since I need stability more than a little more speed. It works great for the little gaming I do nowadays. OC it and you should be fine

What if the op has a mobo that does not OC?

Sure as a 2500k owner I am for 2500k overclocking.

Also the 2500k does not actually stay at 3.3Ghz. It is boosting at 3.7Ghz afaik?

I am pretty sure the 290 will be fine.

I bought a 290X and run my 2500k at 4Ghz. I haven't had any real issues even with my 4k monitor. I don't play any real CPU intensive games though.

Hey guys,

Just wondering if a 2500k without overclocking would bottle neck a amd 290 gpu at 1080p? Thanks
The short answer is yes in some games. However, the "k" after the 2500 means you can legitimately OC the 2500k. Frankly the 2500k should be in the CPU Hall of Fame as an early inductee. An outstanding chip even today.

Simple suggestions. Buy a decent aftermarket heatsink and try OCing the 2500k. I believe at stock it is 3.3Ghz but turbos to 3.7 Ghz so I would try at least 4Ghz OC on all core to start. Monitor the fps change and see if it is worth it. I had a 2500k at a solid 4.5Ghz for a long time and it was a GREAT performer.

Good luck.

He cab even go up to 5.0 or 5.3 if he is lucky, but for speeds beyond 4.5 Ghz, he needs an special cooler or beyong 4.9 Ghz a Water cooler.
