Just got it running in the BIOS for now and it's showing 60C idling, with the stock Intel HSF.

Surely that's too high?

Yes, but sometimes BIOS can report temp too high..
I would really look at all four push pins, make sure you don't have one corner that is higher than the rest ..

One of the corners was unlocked, but otherwise it was ok. Locked the corner but it hasn't changed the temperature.

If I remove/replace the HSF will I have to clean and reapply thermal compound?

Yea that's too high. Download Real Temp and check your temps in windows as well. If they are idling at 60c it is too high.

With that being said, if you have a hot house and a poor, low airflow case, it might be normal for your current circumstances.

I suggest for just testing, take the side of your case off so it has "clean" air to work with just to see where your temps stand.. Normally a closed case with good airflow will only change your temps a couple degrees. I have seen some restrictive cases change it close to 10 degree. At least if you test it you will know if you have ventalation issues or something else.

For reference, my overclocked 2600k shows ~40C in BIOS and ~30C idling in Windows. Did you apply any thermal paste on your own? The stock cooler comes with it preapplied I think.

Thanks for that. The BIOS *does* seem to drive it higher. I'll try under Windows as soon as I managed to get the pos installed.

The stock cooler *does* have it preapplied. I didn't apply any myself. Though if I want to reseat it do I have to clean everything and reapply?

BIOS drives it higher..

my chip idles at 30-40C at Windows idle, stock cooler, stock settings (Intel's Desktop Utility on an Intel P67 mATX board)
BIOS reads it at 55C

Sounds very high to me. You could try reapplying the paste and yes if you reseat the chip you will need to reapply. I always do at least.

Under a corsair H50 my idle temps were in the mid 40's which seemed high. Re-applied and it was down in the mid 30's so it can make a difference.

Slight Hijack.. insom I am currently putting my 2600K setup toghter and am interested in who you feel the H50 is working for you? I have read some others are using it and the more info I get the better. I have a new H50 (from an older project) and a new XigamTek Dark Knight.. I had planned on runnning 2 fans on the H50 (some very interesting reads on it with different fans) but Sound is a issue... I dont want to go back ot the old Hair dryer jet fans..

How is the H50 working for you OC'ing (if you are) and are you running a single fan or more?

And sorry to OP, just not alot of H50 talk now that he H70 is out.

I'm using 2 fans push/pull as exhaust. These are antec tri-cools set to medium, which iirc are not great fans by any means. I used to have them as intake on my last platform (q9550) as that is what is recommended but I tried both on the 2500k and temps did not change. As exhaust you can keep the normal airflow of the case (in front out back) and don't have to worry about dust build up on the rad if you have filters on all the intake fans. With it setup this way I much prefer this over a giant tower air cooler. I just checked temps and they are 28/55C idle/load according to the mobo. This is at 4.2ghz everything set to auto. Reading 1.25V atm. I can't imagine 2 good 120mm fans would need to produce much noise to keep the chip cool with an H50.

Basically the H50 was as good as almost every hs/f available when it was released and the 2500k already runs super cool on the stock hs/f so yeah... H50 is great for it.

Sometimes BIOS's can be wrong albeit rarely and it's best not to hope this is true in your case.

You want to load up your OS (Windows etc.) and then download and run a program such as CoreTemp or RealTemp and read the individual temperatures of the cores.

Sadly ever since 2004 Intel has resorted to a poor cooler locking mechanism so it's actually not hard at all to mistakenly attach their boxed cooler. A much better solution is to buy a 3rd party cooler from the likes of Noctua (best) or others (Thermalright, Promilatech, Zalman, Coolermaster etc.).
