Hey everyone, I'm new here but I've been following anandtech for a little while and recently bought an i5-2500k with the asus p8p67 pro motherboard. I've been looking forward to OC it, but I've run into a bit of a problem... my temps seem way too high! I'm just using the stock cooler, but I'm scared I will destroy the chip if I attempt any sort of nontrivial overclock.
My system at "idle" runs about 47/48 deg C (this is with like ~2% load). I've actually been afraid of running Prime95 at all, since in 60 seconds the temps climb to 90+ deg C (at this point I get worried and kill it). Prime95 seems to make the temps jump a lot though, as under other types of 100% load (gaming, matlab) it gets to around 78/79 deg C. Still not good, but less worrisome. I've been measuring these temps with Core Temp and hwmonitor, and they seem to agree. Speedfan gives some wacky numbers that I'm not so sure about (70 deg C at idle...). The uefi bios seems to agree with core temp and hwmonitor, as whenever I go in there the temp reads at around 52 deg C.
I'm running in a cooler master elite 334 case, which didn't have any temperature problems with the previous setup with a Phenom II.
Am I doing something obviously wrong or is my chip just really sad? I doubt this is normal, at least looking at other people's temps. I've reapplied the thermal paste twice (with arctic silver), but the temperature hasn't varied that much under load or at idle (idle was a little higher at around 53 deg with the pre-applied stuff). I'd buy an aftermarket cooler for an eventual overclock, but I'd first like to figure out if I need to RMA my cpu or mobo before doing that.
