Getting the itch to upgrade. Should I? MC has it for $399 out the door with an asus AR mobo.

Depends on what you use it for and/or if you can justify the purchase.

The performance upgrade will not be too significant but you gain HT and better thermal efficiency with the Devil's Canyon. Plus, your itch is cured.

Why the prices for the 4790k go down when skylake comes out? What prices will we see for skylake? is skylake DDR4 only?

Skylake will probably have a better alternative then the 4790k, so skylake will make the 4790k irrelevant to a certain extent (or may also cause slight sales, but usually old CPU models just fade out instead of getting big price drops).

As for DDR4, skylake is reported to potentially support both ddr4 and ddr3 (so it would be up to the mobo manufacturers to pick which one trhey want to use).

5820K and a moderate X99 board like an Extreme 4 with a basic 2400MHz DDR4 kit. 6 cores is still 6 cores plus hyperthreading.

Going from i5 to i7, two generations ahead, and way up in clockspeed, is a decent upgrade IMO. You also get the chipset improvements with more SATA3, USB3, and PCIE3.

That itch could very soon relocate to the eyeball if you pull that trigger now and sweet sweet skylake turns out to be real sweet real soon.

I went from x58 i7-920 to 4790k and the performance improvement was considerable when to take into account the chipset and supporting hardware.

How much RAM do you have?

I am in at 16GB and am trying my 4790k and H110i GT this weekend.

No way I am paying for 16GB of DDR4 this fall; maybe when Broadwell-E drops (then a few months after that, get 32GB DDR4).

I only upgraded when my AMD PII-955 died 2 months ago and that CPU was still playing games without issue. Your 2500K is better than my old Phenom II so i don't think you really need to upgrade. Also why would you buy a new chipset when you will need another mobo to upgrade past the 4790K?

Not way up in clockspeed, he is running his 2500K at 4.2GHz. I think that puts the ST increase at around 15%.

Historically, new chip brings good combo deals. Right now the 4790k cost more than when it was released (It was down to 300 while everywhere is around 310-330 right now). Motherboards have all dropped in price by about 20% and have decent sales now. With combo deals you can often get $100-$150 off on the egg and frys, often cheaper than waiting. So chip release is the best time to buy actually!

Pricing always fluctuates with market demand so paying attention to the trend pays off if you're attentive.

When is skylake coming? I keep thinking sky net

Skylake should be out around August-September.

And i have to agree with everyone else. Your current CPU is no slouch so i'd suck it up and wait for Skylake.

Microcenter will have deals on that as well.

I've been contemplating an upgrade to an "E" system since late 2013 -- first thinking of IB-E, then Haswell-E. I keep putting it off.

Other members have remarked to me that they expect to get another four years service from a 2600K or 2700K sporting overclocks between 4.6 and 4.8. And I see that the OP only has the 2500K overclocked to 4.2Ghz, while I think it MAY be capable of 4.5+ without pushing the full-load turbo-voltage any higher than 1.37V.

I have a close friend who is crippled with MS, and hasn't been able to effectively use his computers for about two years now. In his frustration, when I begin to discuss computers during our visits, he asks me "But Bonzai -- WHAT do you USE your computers FOR?!"

So, with little difference from my own situation, the OP could "tweak and wait," or spend the money. But that question in the above paragraph has a lot to do with stocks and flows of money together with just plain "satisfaction."
