What's everybody's take on this?

How can an unlocked i5 2500k be on-par or even beaten by a locked 4430 @ 3.2ghz I know there are small 5% IPC increase per generation + node shrinks but can it really be that significant?

Also, side note: is this why the Haswell MacBook Air's had a downclock compared to their Ivy Bridge similars? 1.3ghz Haswell could match a 1.7ghz Ivy Bridge i5 I suppose that's why they didn't bother going for a higher clocked version.

280x with ultra settings and 4xAA? Game is completely GPU limited in that scenario. a 4.6ghz 2500K would be running the game at 300 fps with dual Titan X's

mabe because both cpu's can max a 280x out? If you had 2 280x's the results would be different. A 4330 cpu is more than enough for any modern single gpu.

Because BF4 isn't a GPU intensive game, right...?

I don't want to sound like a jerk but some people really need to see things in good context.

I am not sure what you are saying, but i agree with the other posters that the game is gpu limited, at least in the scenario that is being tested at the settings used.

BF4 is demanding both of cpu and gpu, and the load on each can vary depending on the scenario and settings.

This is one of those cases where it would be good to test at lower resolution and quality to be sure the GPU is eliminated as an obstruction. That, or run a high end GPU.

Still running a 2500K at 4.5, have yet to need a reason to upgrade as everything runs pretty well.

A lot of the users here don't care about value or performance/dollar and simply upgrade every time Intel releases something new which is fine but separate way of thinking.

Id take the 2500K any day over the other one mentioned, I had one it clocked out @5800 on a maximus IV Gene under water. I never should have sold that CPU!

Yeah, I am pretty sure a 2500K at 4.7GHz outperforms a 4430 at almost everything.

Ah right that makes a lot more sense, didn't think about the GPU side of things when watching this. So would a locked i5 4430 then be a significant bottleneck when paired in SLI / Xfire compared to an unlocked and overclocked i5 or will this not matter once DX12 drops?

HW ~= (1.08 x 1.03) SB

Worse still,

HW ~= (1.08 x 1.03 x 1.1) Nehalem, which is a disappointing result after waiting 5 years (~50% better performance for typical maxed-out overclocks)

It will likely be the limiting factor, though it's impossible to say by how much. Multi-GPU setups should get as much CPU as you can throw at them, since they offer so much potential. What you will see is wild variations in frame rate as certain frames struggle to be delivered by the CPU while most others fly along thanks to the massive throughput of the GPUs.

Stock 3.5GHz quad desktop Haswell is enough for any singleplayer game @ 1080p/1200p or above with a single GPU. Only the minimums will dip more compared to Haswell @ 4.2Hz and by dip 45 to sub 40 say. You basically won't notice a difference in most singleplayer games.

I think the i5-4430 is a 3.0GHz unit with only 3.2GHz max Turbo, though that's not far short of 3.5GHz.
