Sup?

I got a 1070 Ti from a very good price, but I have an i5 6400 with H110 chipset that is bottlenecking really hard my vga.

Most games I play at 2k or 4k, are no trouble for my card, but my cpu is mostly at 100% all the time and I can see most graphical options that are cpu bond sucking even more frames.

Which brand new cpu should I switch to in order to ease this blottlenecking? I´d like to pair it with a cheap mobo.

i5 8400 or r5 2600, other price/performance option?

without fast ram and overclocking the i5 8400 will be ahead for gaming; the only thing is that the 2600 might age better because of SMT (12 threads)

if you can get an i7 that works on your motherboard, like 6700/7700 that should be basically as good as the other 2 for gaming.

Grab a i5 8400 and you will be good to go, and no worries your CPU doesn't have HT so long as your a gamer, but HT is important in hardcore professional apps. good luck

HT helps with games, if the game is using enough cores in a meaningful way, above your physical core count,
like HT makes a huge difference for the dual Core i3s and Pentiums on most games, it helps quite a bit for the quad core i7s; with 6 cores right now it doesn't make a huge difference, because you already have 6c anyway, but, in a couple of years, with the new consoles in 2020+ probably having way stronger CPUs (and probably SMT enabled), it could make a big difference, having 6c/6t vs 6c/12t

My biggest issue for moving to rysen is my ddr4 is at 2400 mhz.

i7 (even old gen) is overpriced in my country, cant afford them.

Yes games will all go HT but not anytime soon.

the ram won't be best for a ryzen build but at least the R5 has a spiffy cooler and a decent OC wil close the gap. plus you can get a more feature rich AM4 mobo for the same $$. in the future(?) another cpu (zen+) and some faster ram, you'll have a whole new system.

but an i5 w/H370 board is really simple to deal with. please don't get an H310 for gaming . . unless you're really hurting.

"cant" is too strong, I m just not willing to get an overpriced hardware like that in my country
what country/region?

if you're still looking for suggestions, where you are at will affect availability and prices.

well, i know you just said that but . .so we have an idea.

yeah thats it. :/

Brazil. H110 to Z370 is about to U$ 60 which is way heavier for our wage then for usa´s.

I just can't recommend an Intel system these days that lock memory speed and clockspeed. So many games these days love fast memory and 2666 is a limiting factor.

ok.
if you are needing to just plug in some SATA storage (ssd/hd) and 1070ti gpu, then ignore my plea to avoid the H310 chipset.

with that said, how much of a difference would it be for you to look at:
https://www.terabyteshop.com.br/produto/9170/placa-mae-asrock-b360m-pro4-ddr4-cfx-lga-1151

you get a few more pci-e lanes, that are gen 3 and some USB gen3.1 support for new devices. if that would matter.

Imo if you can't afford a Z board for Intel, best go AMD.
Have to disagree, i5 8400 certainly does not require a Z motherboard, and out of the box is faster than any Ryzen overall. Hell, couldnt you even go to an 8700 without a z board?

Edit: I am sure you know this, but Coffee Lake is much less dependent on fast memory than Ryzen.

Intel loves fast memory too. An i5 8400 caps at 4.0 which any AMD system can do with a motherboard that supports overclocking.

DDR4 may be pricey now, but it will not be forever. Nothing worse than needing a new motherboard as motherboard prices do not substantially drop.

I don't even like the i5 8400 anymore. It barely outperforms 4c8t i7s and its clockspeed is quite low. Intel only makes sense at the high end imo.

It really comes down to if OP plans on staying at 60hz and they do not play games that love fast RAM like any RTS game, Fallout 3/4. ARMA, R6S. We are talking nearly a 20fps difference on Intel for these types of games!

It sounds like 2666 is in his budget but if he ever upgrades his RAM or CPU owning a Z motherboard will instantly allow him this. At least on AMD he can get a cheaper board to allow this

subjectively the lack of features like a lesser audio codec, i/o, VRM components, sparse bios and the minor details. not saying anything is wrong w/them but they are the bottom of the barrel in features.

8400 is 65W TDP, H310 boards all can handle it as far as I know, as for the rest... the CPU is locked anyway, if you are saving money you are likely to use only SATA, audio quality is for a few people to care once it's good enough, my ALC662 sounds fine to my ears.

Imo if you can't afford a Z board for Intel, best go AMD.

I see it differently, the appeal of H310+8400+cheapest ram possible, using the stock cooler is pretty strong,
it's cheaper than whatever equivalent performance you can get with AMD for gaming.

It really limits the ability to upgrade down the road. That's just me I guess.

hold it, speaking of upgrades . . what's wrong with finding a gently used i7-6700(K)?

the problem is thhe 4c/4t chip, right? i mean afaik, in reviews with gaming benches the 4c/8t i7 ~= 6c/6t i5.

Your current CPU is not that much slower than the I5 8400 or the R5 2600, though for only $30 more I would suggest the 2600x as it comes with a much better cooler, has much higher boost clock of up to 4.25GHz on two cores and has XPM which if you have high quality cooling can boost the clock up to 200MHz more.

So it's much better in lighter threaded applications than the 2600, in fact at stock its over 20% faster. Obviously you can OC the 2600 up to 4.1GHz easily and use the $30 that you save to buy an aftermarket cooler, there are some quite good ones for $30 and $40.

Ultimately your I5 6400 is not bottlenecking your GPU that much, if at all. It would depend on the games, but I think the large majority of games would have little to none of a bottleneck.

If you are going to "upgrade" then you need to look at R7 2700x or I7 8700k or at least the 8600k. Going for a 8400 or a 2600 would be more of a side grade, sure you are going to gain 10% to 15% performance, but in terms of fps that amounts to like 3-6fps gains, hardly worth it investing $200 in a CPU and $100+ in a mobo.
