Wondering if I can OC it. I have a pretty good heat sink and many fans inside the case. I'm a newb and need basic steps.

Thank You!

The K in 2600K means its unlocked and you can OC it. Go to BIOS, and start raising the mutliplier until you get to 4.2Ghz. Easy no need to touch the vcore also. My old man has a Sandy 2600k and taking the multiplier to 42 I believe gave him a 4.2 stable OC. good luck

Simply go to the BIOS
- Hit up the multiplier to around 43-44 and work your way from there assuming you want to push the Vcore and clocks a bit
- Internal PLL on, LLC ultra-high, but can be reduced a bit from then on depending on stability
- Spread Spectrum on ASUS boards as they claim it can enhance stability, haven't had issues
- Don't use OC Tuner/Auto-OC as it sets ridiculous Vcore presets for relatively low clocks (1.4 passed easy because of it)
- XMP Profile for the RAM, don't worry about the IMC and degradation if its 1.65+, but you can test stability for a slightly lower voltage like 1.4v
- Once you find stability at a preset Vcore, add a small minus offset to reduce degradation and allow it to dip according to load/speed
- Disable virtualization

Open the system, download Prime95 26.6v and not anything newer because of ridiculous AVX based strain for newer procs, HWmonitor/Coretemp/HWinfo or the first two mainly for temps and vcore, maybe even CPU-z, Intelburntest to shorten stability testing a bit, and any version of local memtest (HCI) for memory stability

Hit the processor with Prime95 (preferably) and Small FFTs (Blend preset is a bit weaker and thus comparatively cooler on load) and hit it for at least 2 hours to assess theoretical stability under load. Temps will fly, but beneath 75C max is alright. Your goal is maximum stability and not a hair more. Don't worry about 100% load in typical usage scenarios, 75 doesn't mean temps will exceed 65C in modern games.

And if you live in one of God's modern beta-sandboxes for hell (like moi in the Sahara desert) expect room temp to factor in significantly, esp with non tip-top or generic paste

I can run 4.3Ghz on 2500K with 1.28V on my 8 year old 2500K 24/7, but without the powerful air-conditioner on 4.5 1.33Ghz hits 80C on prime, 65 in games. With it on full blast on a hot day? 4.8 without hitting 75C and the volts stay quite low.

Sorry i didn't get notifications people have responded to my post here. So here are some screen caps of my BIOS. I've not yet adjusted anything, where do i make changes as suggested?

If you're unsure you can watch the process in action on youtube, with differing videos and of course slight variations in achieving system stability. Just be careful and read up a bit on the individual options if you can from forum guides.

Once you achieve the voltage for max. stability, try to use a negative offset instead of fixed to avoid long-term deterioration.

So i guess i've OC'd to 4.5GHZ Although windows still showing 3.4ghz. During my Burn Test, it shows 4.4ghz in CPU-Z but my "real temp" seems high it's in the late 80's. Will it be stable and ok?

Nope that seems like it is too hot and maybe throttling because of the heat so not reaching your 4.4ghz clock. It is showing 3.8

Prime95 is not the best, especially some versions which run very hot. Can you try OCCT or RealBench and see what happens?

Can I ask what CPU fan you have? If it is not very good you may need to decrease the voltage a fair bit and shoot for a 4.1-4.2 OC

People argued about this for years but I would try and stay in the 60's for games and regular programs and maybe 70's for most stress tests.

Guys Windows always show slow Mhz which is not your speed. Its a windows thingi forget about it, just check with CPU-Z or alike app.

You want 70's C. Going into 80's will only mean your very close to TJMAX and your CPU will probably freeze or crash. Ideally you want 60's and 70's c. Thanks

Sorry guys, i been busy. I tried this again and used OCCTPT, it gave me a bunch of errors. My CPU fan is like the double sided one by CoolMaster 212 I believe (it has 2 fans). I got it over 5 years ago so I'm not sure the model exactly but it looks like that. But here are all the images.

quick update. i got a message Core #1 Over Maximum Value! Value Reached 86, MAX value 85. and Core #2 Over Maximum Value! Value Reached 90, MAX value 85.RealTemp reported 70-75 temps.

edit: i set it to 4.2 and it seems to be better. what do you guys think of the status it's showing?

Stick at 4.2 and simply use offset instead of manually entering voltage. gl Anything higher then those 80 and 90c temps your CPU will shutdown and your abusing the CPU. Just stick with what you have.

I got the same error message at 4.2. I think my CPU FAN is not good enough? My other question was, is it really a difference from stock 3.4 to 4.2/4.5?

That depends, your temps are fine right ? If so then I think you should just set the vcore to offset and if it still happens at 4.2 then 4.2 is not a reality for you, Try 4Ghz and call it a day. I know people with Sandys, they just up the multiplier and get a stable 4.2Ghz overclock. I have no idea why you cant get 4.2Ghz and what not. Then again I don't know what kind of tinkering your doing in the BIOS.

I think we can set to bios defaults,, then simply take up the multiplier and offset the vcore we can get your 4.2Ghz and also watch your temps. gl

Yea sure in benchmarks and huge map multiplayer games / renders you will see a difference. In real world other tasks? Nope. I bet you just need to reapply the thermal paste. reseat the cpu and surely will overclock to 4.2 np

Organik, Thanks all for your help, I been following YT videos and advise from here. Another thing is i reset my BIOS to default but in OCCT it is reporting 4.4, with a 30% OC, why is this?

killster1 i will have to find the time to do this next week and retry, I'm also trying to figure out the exact CPU FAN i have installed. IDK if it would be written on the unit itself or what.

What kind of thermal paste are you using?

Try removing and reinstalling the HSF maybe it’s not making good contact with the heatspreader.

Edit failed reading in school someone already suggested that.
