i7-2600k possibly overheating on Asus P8Z68 Deluxe

Hello all,

I'm in the process of putting together a PC for the first time. A few bits of background info: I'm running the i7 with the stock cooler and on stock settings (no overclocking). I've connected the CPU fan to the CPU_fan connector.

Last night I finally had everything set up, so I turned it on only to get a "CPU fan error" from the motherboard. I go into the BIOS and the CPU fan speed reads as "N/A". I check the temps and they were rising steadily; I shut the PC down at 54 (!) degrees Celcius. I turned the PC on and off a few times, sometimes the CPU fan would turn on, sometimes it wouldn't.

I find a thread online in which a user suggested turning off Q-fan, so I boot up the PC again and turn Q-fan off, then restart. This time I don't get the "CPU fan error", the CPU temps go down to 32 degrees Celcius, and the CPU fan speed reports around 1050 rpm (not sure why it wasn't reported when Q-fan was on). Of course now the CPU fan is extremely loud.

What is going on here?

Now that we know that Q-fan could be the culprit and disabling it solves the problem, I don't see the need to solve any other problems than the fan noise.

The small stock heatsink can only do so much to dissipate heat and it would usually be at the expense of increased noise. If you're really bothered by the noise, get an aftermarket cooler like the Noctua D-14 or a budget CM Hyper212 Evo. The Core i7 2600K is meant to be overclocked anyway, so getting one right now could be a good idea.

Welcome to the forum!

Most of the stock intel cooler come with the power cabel wrapped too tight and they sometimes touch the fan blades. Did you make sure they are not touching the blades?

You should be able to set the cpu fan up in bios manually did you try? I think it's in the Monitor tab. You could try setting the min duty cycle to 40% or something to see how noisey it is.

As already stated the stock cooler pretty much sucks. The last couple I tried seem to be pretty whiney. For me they are good for nothing more than a test boot to make sure the combo is functional before a case install.

The stock Intel® HSF (heatsink/fan) can be a little bit of a pain to put on. First unhook the power cord from where it is connected around the fan. Next as you put the HSF on make sure that you connect the twist clips in a cross pattern (personally I like to put the stock HSF on the board before I mount the board in the case). So you can do it bottom right to top left then top right to bottom left and then turn the board over and look on the back and if any of the clips are not seated all the way you will be able to see it. If you have already build the system you can simply reach in and grab each twist clip in turn and see if you can pull it straight up. If you are able to pull it straight up it wasn’t seated well.
While the Intel stock HSF are not the best they should work fine as look as you are not overclocking or looking for a very quite system.

Slightly off topic, but I quite like how LGA775, 1155, 1156 and 1366 heatsinks are mounted. Not as 'solid' as Socket 478 though, and now that I've built a few lga2011 systems, I really really hope that all future intel sockets have the same as lga2011, it is simply fantastic!

"I shut the PC down at 54 (!) degrees Celcius"

Just as a heads up, while 54c is a high idle temp, it's not a dangerous temp so don't worry.

I would simply buy a better cooler and one that is silent in your situation. A cheap 20 dollar hyper 212 works well and is very quiet at the lowest setting. You can also go into your bios and set the cpu fan to "silent" which will keep it at the lowest rpm possible.

Either way use a monitoring tool to check your temps at load and not idle. Cpuid hardware monitor is what i suggest to everyone as it works on all motherboards. Use linx to put a load on the system and to check for stability.

Hope this issue has been solved for you .

PS: If you guys think the stock intel hsf is loud you would cry at my system.

Well, the problem was really simple, and really stupid. The CPU fan was hitting not one but TWO cables. One of them was a big power cable which downright stopped it from moving when this happened. The other was, as Kenmitch suggested, the fan cable which came coiled too tightly around the fan.

I just ran a Furmark + Prime95 test and GPU temp stabilized at 86 degrees Celsius and CPU cores at around 70 (according to SpeedFan).

Thanks for the help, gentlemen!
