I'll do a video or a simple paint post regarding Intel stock HSF installation for the 2600K in a week or two.

I just remember, while installing the heatsink, it wasn't attached very good and I pulled it back off..but the tim was already applied.

I just pushed it back on (good this time) but the tim was already applied...Could this be the problem?

I did some tests with stock settings and stock cooler here. The CPU got pretty hot quickly but if you can offset your Vcore to a lower value you might find that helps. Here's the results of offsetting Vcore by -0.15V from the link above.

Room temp is about the same as MB temp as there is no casing. The stock cooler worked better than I expected. Actual CPU power was closer to 75W. I think the Intel package power reporting works off the VID rather than Vcore itself. Hope this gives some idea of what can be expected from stock.

Seems likely. The tim got messed up and now there are a lot of airpockets which prevent proper contact between cooler and ihs, trapping heat.

If you're gonna order tim you might as well do yourself a favor and get a decent aftermarket cooler while you're at it.

You generally don't want to go over 70C with any CPU because the computer would start getting strange problems.
False. I regularly run my Intel CPUs north of 70C, and have had no problems with them, over several years.

AMD CPUs, on the other hand, do have problems exceeding 70C.

I think this may be the best case. After researching things for a day or two I came to the conclusion the best bang for the buck in an After marker cooler would be COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus on the low end [30.00] and the Noctua NH-D14 on the high end.[75.00-90.00] I have a large case so i went with the Noctua as I hear it is prety much one of the best air coolers hands down. I am far from being an expert, ask around and do research before making purchases. I can say I was very very disappointed in the Intel stock cooler as well as Intel decision not to include that huge one they were sending out for review.

I know with my Intel E8500 that no matter what I did, I could not get under 70c at full load, and could not get under mid 50sc at Idle. I bought after market cooler, reapplied heatsinks, thermal paste, different amounts from gobs to nearly nothing and everything in between, and even lapping the CPU and could never get the temps down.

I think sometimes you just get those odd parts. It's still running fine though and it's been 3 years.

I think I'm gonna buy a H50/ Corsair A50

This time, I'm only going to drop a little 'ball' of tim on the cpu and attach the cooler right after. I'm not going to spread it.

I've heard that is one of the best ways to avoid getting a thick tim layer

You have to "burn" it in so to speak, so try and raise the CPU heat a little to get it to spread a little quicker. Intel Burn Test is pretty good at this, just run your CPU on stock at first.

Burning in with AS5 helps but it's not necessary with the newer stuff like MX2 (which I recommend because it's non-conductive).

About H50, I don't really like it. Sure, looks neat but cooling wise it's not that strong. Thermalright MUX, TRUE or Venomous, Prolimatech Megahalems. That's where it's at. DH14 or Silver Arrow if you want the ultimate. Hyper 212/Mugen for the budget.

Also, H50 requires 2 fan headers, one for the pump (which is noisy) and one for the fan (which takes up the place of a regular casefan). So make sure you have enough spare.

Using H50 and looking for the perfect way to apply tim is a bit contradictory imho. If you want better cooling, get a better cooler. The difference between various ways of applying tim is like 2/3 degrees...

The pump is driven off of a fan header? Not a molex? Can a mobo fan header source that much current?

I think I saw in the manual to my current main rig that the fan header for the CPU Fan can provide 1 Ampere.

H50/ Corsair A50 use Shin Etsu thermal paste. Do not ruin that by adding more paste from a lesser brand like AS5 that needs to be replaced.

It's a small pump...Corsair says it should go on the pwr fan header (that is, if your mobo has one) so it just gets constant 12V. At least that's what H50 owners told me.

Never heard about Shin Etsu. But I understood this is the new hot stuff, so to speak: http://www.coollaboratory.com/de/produkte/liquid-ultra/

Idle (youtube/winamp/internet) : ~30C
UEFI: 60C+
Prime 95/Linx : 90C+

Speed: Stock (3.4 Ghz)

I have not used any thermal paste, only the one which was already applied to the stock cooler (by intel)

This leads me to believe I did something wrong while installing the cooler

What's the temperature in the room? Doing Prime95 testing right now.

Ambient: 17-18C
Right out of sleep: 18-20C
Prime 95 2 mins in: 75-80C stable, temperature depends on cores

28-29C: Youtube 1080p
25-26C: Youtube 360p
