My laptop runs very hot at full load and crosses the 80C mark . It is also very jumpy in temperature. I this normal for i7-4610m CPU ?
Here are the images showing the temperature graph in Speccy :

the temperature rises very rapidly and drops slowly once load is reduced. Do others have similar experience or something in not right with my system. I have cleaned the fan and vents and also have the laptop on a docking station which raises the laptop a bit so airflow is fine. If possible please post your CPU temperature graph so it can be compared. Comments appreciated.

80C isn't outrageous. Under full load. The CPU should be able to handle 100.

What model laptop? Different laptops will vary, so unless we have the same model it's not really relevant. What is room temperature?

Very normal for laptops. They design them to run up to about 85-90c, so as to keep fan noise lower.

Thanks for the comments it is reassuring that the laptop is working with acceptable limits. Although i have another laptop same model with a i5-4200m , which never exceeds 72c even with 100% load using prime95. Which did raise flags when this laptop ran the temperature over that limit. Both CPU's been dual core.

Even so, consider opening the case and redoing the thermal paste. The two CPUs are both spec'd at 35W TDP, and while TDP != absolute power use (it's a design limit for the cooler), there really should not be such discrepancy.

i7-4610M is a Haswell CPU, so it's likely that laptop is 3+ years old and its thermal compound is long since dried up.

Yeah I was going to suggest this but HP laptops aren't friendly with regards to access to CPUs.

80deg seems normal for a laptop with Haswell-nonU CPU.

They were in the previous generations. I had an 8470p for a while (had to sell it--friend needed money) and the maintenance was fairly easy. IIRC they switched into the G(number) naming after that, so this one is going to be something like Probook 840 G1 right? Maybe they changed the casing a lot...

Did change the thermal paste with Noctua NT‑H1 , using the line method as the cpu thermal spreader shape is rectangular in i7-4610m , Still the same result. Just jumps to over 80C on full load.

There is actually a rather large difference between these two chips. Much moreso than your typical i5/i7 notebook segmentation. That i7 has a base clock of 3.0GHz, while the i5 is only 2.5GHz. If you were to go into your power options and throttle the i7 down to 2.5GHz I bet it falls in line with the i5's readings.

Well it does have more cache, which could affect how much heat prime95 is able to produce. I would knock off another 5% to try to compensate for that. That should put you down to around 82C. That would put you within 10C of the other system which is probably within the normal range of variability between like model notebooks that have been in use for several years.

There is nothing wrong with your 4610m, imo.

Stop trying to fix it.

It has more cache, faster gpu clocks, and much higher base and turbo clocks than the i5.

Besides all that, if it gets too hot, which it is nowhere near, it will simply throttle.
It will not be damaged in any way.

I guess i will leave it alone for now , as the temps stay below 70C during normal use. I appreciate all the comments . Thanks.
