Hey guys,
I plan to buy a new computer for virtual machines and gns server, and I don't know which one is better for me.
I tried to read some articles, and to the best of my knowledge - i7 is better because the TSX and vPRO.
Am I right? Can you give me some more information?
Thanks.

I agree the 4790 is a much better CPU, but depending on your budget the 8350 or even the 8320 might be the better option. The 8350 is currently about $125 cheaper than the 4790 (on Newegg), and the 8320 is about $155 cheaper. That $155 could get you another 16GB RAM and could be more beneficial to you than the better performance of the 4790 (with less RAM) under heavy usage. Or keep the RAM equal and use the savings for a SSD.

Keep in mind that the 4790 can use its IGP, while you will need to buy one if you don't have one for the 8320/50, reducing the effective savings on the latter two.

TSX-NI is probably a ways off from being implemented in useful software (you can double check your VM app and GNS). V-pro shouldn't matter either. VT-x matters, and VT-d can be useful under certain situations (note that the 4790k is the only K series with Vt-d). AMD enables their VT-x and VT-d equivalents in all CPUs IIRC.

A 4820 quadcore is an awful buy compared to Haswell. The 4790(k) is a much better option then.

Not only is the 4790(k) faster, it also got less overhead for virtualization.

Not to mention, Haswell-E is around the corner. Meaning IB-E is utterly obsolete.

I'm running an 8350 and it is fast, handles everything I've thrown at it with ease. It's only $179 at NewEgg now too so it's good buy.

If you really have to ask this question, get the AMD and save some cash, because there will be little if any difference in anything you are likely to use it for.

Except for every non biased single benchmark on this planet supporting that the 4790 is substantially faster whilst dumping way less power and is on a modern platform, not obsolete like AM3+. There is now zero reason to consider an FX processor. Its a compromise in every way that isn't worth it.

I thought the FX line up did pretty well in VM benchmarks I've seen. I'm not someone who has 15 virtual machines going at once under load, so I didn't pay a ton of attention. But from what I remember, I thought AMD's FX CPU's were pretty solid performers there... maybe not?

Did you even read what I posted, especially the first eight words? I doubt anyone who has to ask the question posed is going to be trying out benchmarks to check the size of their e-peen, or will be doing enough serious computational work frequently enough and long enough for a real difference (not just a few seconds) to show up.

I didn't suggest the fx is anywhere near the cpu the i7 Haswells are. It just doesn't sound like OP would be able to discern enough of a difference to justify the cost differential. Hell, I actually thought this was a troll thread.

Unlike certain fanboys on this forum I don't sit around bench marking my computer to see a graph. My friend has a 4790 and we've both used each others computers in common everyday tasks and in gaming and we both can't see any difference at all between my stock 8350 and his stock 4790 period.

The Xeon E3-1231v3 is probably the best CPU for the buck in this application, if there is an old dGPU around to drive the monitor.

This guy isn't doing normal everyday tasks. There will be a difference. It's just a question of how worth it that difference is.

I agree with crashtech.

Pretty much this.

But honestly after re-reading what this will be used for, just buy whatever you want. The intel chips are superior in almost every way, but the AMD chip is cheap and is especially suited to running VMs or a server i guess.

I personally wouldn't buy any of AMDs current CPUs. But thats just me.
I like their GPUs tho.

Forget TSX (borked). If you have the scratch, get an i7.
If not (and you have a Microcenter nearby) pick up an FX8320 + Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 for $119.99 + tax and call it a day

Utter nonsense. Most of the negative reviews/benchmarks of the FX were run under Windows 7 (an OS that cripples the AMD architecture through it poor scheduling).

Under Linux -- and FX 8350 is just as fast (and sometimes faster) than an i7 3770k. I own both of these chips personally. They are quite respectable since the street price on an FX 8320/5350 is usually about 40-50% of the cost of a 3770K.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_fx8350_visherabdver2&num=1

I have run virtual machines on FX's and it does a solid job. Just be sure to run a lot of Memory (I'd recommend 16 GB at least). All the AMD FX chips support important VM features like the AES instruction set, or AMD-V(AMD Virtualization) support, etc. from the FX-8350 to the cheap FX-4300. They don't artificially cripple support like Intel does on their less expensive cpu's. It really depends on how many VM you are planning to run. I had 16 VM's on an FX-8320 and it was very responsive. After that # of VM's though, you'd probably want to spend the extra money on an Intel.

You sure about that deal? The microcenter in my area is showing the processor alone for 119.99, but the cheapest bundle is 159.99. I have only looked on-line, haven't actually been in the store lately though.

They are advertising an FX6300 plus motherboard for 99.99.

Like the freaking plague.

I have heard the FX performs better under Windows 8 but I haven't personally tested that.

I know that an FX 8350 performs like a i7 3770k under linux for anything that isn't
single threaded. The i7 is still better at single threaded tasks, though.

The OP hasn't been back to tell us what OS he is running, but it's safe to assume that the majority of readers will run Windows. So I don't see escrow4's declaration to be totally out of line, unless we are expected to add the caveat that heavy multithreaded loads under Linux might benefit from an FX.

Definitely sure. Just add the FX8320 to your cart, then add the 78LMT-USB3. It'll take $45 off instead of the usual $40. After a $10 MIR, the mobo is free.

Just bought 8 of those setups within the last two weeks
