Hi. This is my very 1st post.

I am building a PC right now. Well actually buying all the components, then building.
I just bought the Intel i7 4970k Crucial Ballistix 16gb DDR3 RAM. I also got the Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 mobo.

MY background and experience with PC's is minimal to none. I am replacing our home desktop PC. I could go buy 1 pre-built. But I want this challenge.

Our PC will only be used for the basics. Email, browsing, word documents, possibly some light gaming in the future. But most storing family pics, vids etc. I might like to get into some home video editing in the future.

Is this mobo good for my needs.
I would like to build the biggest and baddest PC I can.
The more bells and whistles it comes with but I don't have Im ok with.

I've been reading about bottlenecking.
Will this mobo hold me back from performance from my CPU?
Will it limit what I can add or do to my PC in the future?

That mobo should be OK..
It would only hold you back if you were subzero overclocking...and only then..maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't...It might not would.
Home video editing would be better with a 6-8 core chip but 4790K is just fine.

That is a nice board. Gigabyte boards have dual BIOS, and allow you to update the BIOS from within Windows, so if you need to flash to a later BIOS down the road, it is almost fool proof.

I have always liked Gigabyte boards. I like my current Asus as well, but this is the first one I felt was actually above average. Asus boards in the past gave me a feeling that I was just paying for the name. Gigabyte boards always left me with the feeling I was getting what I paid for.

Realtek audio has done well for years, and 6 SATA ports give you plenty of room to grow.

The 4790k is a great chip, but is hot! If you haven't already decided to do so, I would get an aftermarket cooler. Don't need anything too fancy, the $30 cooler I have does fine. You just want enough to keep it from throttling under heavy load.

Any Z97 board will work with that processor. Not really sure you will actually need that processor though, an i5 4690K would probably fit your needs just as well. Z87 boards will also work with that processor with the latest BIOS updates. The best deal I've seen recently is the MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX AC, I saw them up at Microcenter for $100 and you get $40 off if you buy a i7 4790K or i5 4690K with it. That thing is loaded with features, including WiFi.

I would have to agree with getting a nice aftermarket cooler for your processor. I would look into a Corsair H series cooler. A lot of companies sell closed loop water coolers for the CPU. The majority of them are made by Asetek and sold by OEM's like Corsair, Intel, AMD, NZXT and many others. They are great little set-ups that not require a lot of work.

Personally, i'd look into G.Skill for your RAM. I'd get something like this:

As for bottlenecking, you have no worries about that with the i 4000 series processors.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I did buy from microcenter. I got both as a bundle for less then $400.
With the 16gb curcial ram it was around $500
