i7-860 to E5-1660 or E5-2670?

I have a home built i7-860 8GB with a Intel board, R9-280X and a pair of 1TB Samsung Drives.

I am thinking about picking up a workstation off eBay 32GB RAM, putting in a SSD and a GTX 1080.
I think I can get it all done for <$1400.

I am not too interested in overclocking. the I7-5775C looks cool, but I don't think it would be the bargain that the eBay hardware is.

Anyway I like the idea of workstation hardware, but I mostly will be gaming.
I am looking for another 5+ year system.

Opinions? A better way to spend $1400ish?
Thanks.

That's a really niche question, as those types of xeons rarely get reviewed for gaming performance. sandy bridge xeon will not stack favorably vs newer arch like the i7 you mentioned or skylake, especially if those have nice memory (altho quad channel alleviates that ). It seems newer games really prefer newer arch/high speed memory, whereas workstation type of apps benefit from more cores. 5820k/6800k seems interesting to me if you want to go for 5+ years. Also which 1660 version are you talkin bout here? Seems they go from 1-v3 (sandy thru haswell). 1660 v2 seems to have pretty decent single thread (3.7-4 ghz). If the question is between 2670/1660, 1660 v2 is no doubt better than 2670 v2 for gaming. 1660 v2 would definitely be a huge upgrade from your 860

Thank you for getting back to me..

I am thinking now that for best longevity I should do another home built system around a X99 board and drop in either a 5820k
or a E5-1620v4 (4 core). Basically the least expensive 2011 chips available now. Then later if I need more CPU power I could upgrade when the prices on the high end parts have fallen..

I just want to make sure I pick a x99 board that is ECC compatible to maximize my options.

Just a quick update...

I ended up buying a T5810 workstation from Dell Outlet. (%30 off coupon)
It has a E5-1650v3 (6 core 3.5ghz)
I then ordered a GTX 1070 and just went a tad over my budget ($1500 total)

I opted for a newer PC because I didn't realize there was a substantial socket change from LGA 2011 vs 2011v3. I wanted to get the v3 for future compatibility / upgrades.

Anyway Passmark shows a ~5000 score for my i7-860 vs ~13500 for the E5-1650v3.
I am looking forward to the upgrade and just waiting for everything to arrive now.

Solid choice (for a non-oc'd), newer games are becoming better and better at utilizing all cores/threads
