its look like the noctua nh-u12P se1366, maybe a little more efficient.
under 70°C @ 3.8, it does a good job
i wonder if my noctua with a dual 120mm fan will do a better job face of your thermalright...

IDONTCARE SAID: No doubt that is what most people are also getting (3.6-3.8) on air

I'll collaborate on that. I get 3.7 on air with my ultra 120 (adding pushpull fans over a single didn't change this much, but did reduce temps a little).

But my i7-920 would blatantly be capable of more on water, I can post way over 4Ghz but I never get into windows. On a cold day, I can get into windows at 4Ghz but any stress test fails.

If I had the balls to go above 1.35V then I *might* be able to hit 4Ghz on air and get through a short prime run... but I'd probably have a dead CPU in a couple of weeks.

I can't remember all my settings right now as I'm at work, but I haven't pumped up much, just given myself a bit of extra Vcore. I think 185Mhz is my Bclk, 1.32v my Vcore. 100% stable though, runs linpack and prime fine (overnight run on prime, linpack only breifly tested). IIRC superpi was a bit under 10s too.

I'd like to get mroe out of my 920, but I'll save that for a major water update to my system some time in the future, probably when I feel the need to replace my 4870x2 with something DX11 coz this pr0k will still be good then, especially if I am able to get another 300-400Mhz out of it which is basically up to a 10% speed improvement.

I must say, I though the core 2 was good, the i7 is the nads.

You got 3.6 with your 920 on air?

Don't for a second walk away thinking that is not an excellent overclock!

But... If you wish to push further I think the biggest obstacle for the i7 is heat. You have about the best air cooler you can get, so your only option (and an often overloooked one I might add) is reducing your ambient temperature.

I've found recently that I can drop my temps by 5 degress by taking the lid off my case. Clearly this means that there is an airflow issue within my case (needs some smoke to trace it) that keeps the case ambient up.

Perhaps you have the same thing, an ambient case temperature than could be reduced with some intelligent design, or perhaps after multiple attempts at placing fans in various places you can evolve a better cooling arrangement within the case. Whatever you do, don't try anything with spaghetti.

Uncore Freq: x17 The reason I bolded this is because there seems to be conflicting opinions on what this setting should actually be. Some say it should be DDR3 speed x2, so if you're running at ~1600 then it needs to be x16 to equal 3200. Others say it's DDR3 speed x2+1 so in the previous example we would need to use x17 to get 3400. I would recommend trying both methods as it might be a motherboard thing.

The uncore is the memory controller. This is required to be at least twice the DDR 3 speed because DDR3 is double pumped but the uncore is not. Hence in order to be able to fill all the bandwidth on your memory bus, you must have enough data coming through the uncore.

Now rules of thumb might come out saying twice ddr speed +1 setting but really all you need for it to work is to be exactly twice the speed (or more). Ultimately it is better to have a synchronous memory interface so if that can be setup with uncore frequencies and DDR speeds then fine. You might not be able to properly realise the benefits of a synchronous memory interface on the i7 though as it is made to handle any memory speeds and synchronous settings may not mean anything different from asynchronous ones in this situation... I don't really know.

I followed IcyBorg's settings Bclk is 160 running stable 3.2ghz, p95 full is 67c and idle is 37c. I haven't done much overclocking, so I am comfortable staying at 3.2ghz. If any of you have any suggestions for me, it would be much appreciated. Cpu-Z says my DRAM frequency is 640...is this okay? Should I be doing something different to get more from my trip-channel corsair 1600?

what's your Memory Frequency (FSBRAM)? Did you set it to 2:10? 160*10 gives you 1600 (800 in DRAM Frequency) for your Corsair Dominator

try to oc more your cpu & less your gpu

you will lost a lot of bucks if you fry your gpu (six months later for my 7800GTX)

How much do you guys think the failure to post is an issue over RAM not meeting specifications? I've got my case open with a Coolermaster V10 and the thing idles at 17C at stock, 19C at 3.6ghz according to evga e-leet. At 3.8 the computer will blue screen while running Vantage, and at 4.0 the thing will blue screen after loading windows.

I mean, it seems like a lot of people are running with very, very good temps, but the systems aren't stable at higher frequencies. Is it possible that a CPU just can't hit beyond a certain frequency regardless of the temps? Or is it more likely that the RAM just isn't stable and is causing the blue screens? I'm thinking of going 2:6 instead of 2:8 and see if its more stable with a lower RAM clock.

You won't lose much by running 20:6 ...

What are your other settings ? How many sticks of RAM ?

Have you tried with just one or two sticks ?

3.8 seems to be fairly common with a few voltage tweaks.

Yeah these things are a furnace.

I did 4GHz with the stock cooler. Stable and does not crash I swear. Just shuts off after about a minute of Occt because it gets too hot and I set the max cpu temp at 100C in that program!

Idle with the stock cooler is in the upper 50's my lord!

Stock cooler is junk on the 940. My goodness with no overclock it hits mid 70's when encoding mp4 videos in Vegas. Six months from now when joe sixpack's stock cooler is crusted with horse hair it's gonna be on the brink of critical mash! I hope the D0 is like the G0 was to the B3 Kentsfields. We can only hope there mates!

Noctura NH-U12P (dropped the True UE for this)
Single Noctura fan @ 1100rpm (silent)
Coarsair Dom 8-8-8-24 1600 3GB Kit

Linpak stable for 20+ runs @ 24 sec & 46 Gflops
Prime Stable for 12+ hours (still running)...4 threads.

bclock 201x18=3.62Ghz (this allows my 1600 memory to run full bore)
VID of 1.29
No HyperThreading
C1E Enabled
Auto for everything else.

Idle is 36c avg and load with Prime is 58 avg.

Hope this helps.

So, is the Noctua that much better than the True on i7?

For me it was an wasy decision. It has a much better mount, easy to work on, and I think it looks better. I'll be selling this one soon as I'm going to water for quietness sake.

I believe I came across a review @ legit reviews ... that tested all of the coolers and the Noctura NH-U12P posted the best resullts but I came to the conclusion that the 2-3 degree difference in temps would be insignificant in my i7 build so I went with the TRUE UE.

3 sticks of DDR 3 ram (g-skill "1600" supposedly at 9-9-9-20)

I'm running without turbo on. 190 x 20. CPU voltage is at 1.32, +250mv, all others are only slightly boosted by +.1 W maybe.

RAM is at 2:8 so at 16x, according to evga eleet its running at 800 (1600mhz) at 11-11-11-28 TRS 74 This will blue screen running 3dmark vantage on the second test, and on prime95 the test will stop saying there's unexpected results (something like value 0.5, expected 0.4)

Iit's stable at 180x20 with the same settings which is 750 (1520mhz) RAM running at 9-9-9-20.

Idle is about 24C at 3.6 and 48C with prime95, about 25-26C at 3.8, prime95 only runs about 20 seconds before it runs into an error so the temp is irrelevant (only goes to about 45C before the test self shutdowns.

I've heard most blue screens are RAM related so maybe I should do 2:6 instead?

I had to choose some weird settings to make this work and no matter what I tried, I couldn't run my RAM at its rated speed of 1600 (had to run it at 1200 instead). Also, my Uncore clock is a little more than 2x the RAM speed. Oddly enough, if I drop the un core multi lower, I get stuck in a boot loop and have to clear the CMOS.

Forgot to add, the idle temps are in the mid-40C and load temps are mid-75C on all 4 cores

Need help with my rig, not a bog OC person I do , but then run aback to stock for longer lasting pc. Now that the i7 is out things more challenging. I am having trouble with my p6t dlx v2 with ocz plat ddr3 1600. running 0504 bios.

upgrading from a AMD64 3500. Not as familiar with OCign intels

What actual setting do you need to set and all others Auto. Did you disbale Spped Step or Intel Virtualization?

mine didn't boot after these setting

I had to choose some weird settings to make this work and no matter what I tried, I couldn't run my RAM at its rated speed of 1600 (had to run it at 1200 instead). Also, my Uncore clock is a little more than 2x the RAM speed. Oddly enough, if I drop the un core multi lower, I get stuck in a boot loop and have to clear the CMOS.

Forgot to add, the idle temps are in the mid-40C and load temps are mid-75C on all 4 cores

Hardware:
Giga UD4P
i7 920 (3841A595)
Scythe Mugen 2
Patriot Viper DDR3 1600 LLK
Sapphire 4870x2
Asus Xonar DX
5x Seagate HDDs
Samsung DVD-R
PCP&C Silencer 750w

I have the UD5, but have trouble getting above 3.8, and I am unstable at 190x20, so I use 200x19. Is your cpu a D0 or C0? Also I may try disabling Isochornus support like you did, and upping uncore freq to 15x. MB that will help me, as we have similar boards.

Of course, if you have a D0, then that could also explain your success over mine.

I have a pretty sweet D0 stepping that even posts at 4ghz @ default voltages but needs a bit more juice for stability.

CPU: 20x200 = 4ghz
RAM: 1603mhz
Uncore: 3206mhz
Vcore: 1.25v
QPI voltage: 1.2v
All other voltages stock

This is cooled on air with a Noctua: http://noctua.at/main.php?show...&products_id=24&lng=en using dual fans in push/pull.

I'm glad I paid the extra few bucks for a D0.
