my pc specs are
i7 920 d0 steping
intel dx58so
mushkin ddr3 1600 6gbz
ati xfx 5870 1gb
corsair 750 watt psu
antec sonata 3
i am using the corsair h50 cooler for my cpu
the cpu is currently overclocked to 3.8ghz and its stable , i did run prime95 for 6 hrs and it didnt fail the max temps were 78 C while being tested with prime 95.
but idle is around 48C to 50C and load so far with sc2 hasnt gone past 60C

the cpu voltage i bumped to 1.37v
the uncore and qpi voltage i believe is at 1.25 or 1.2 v ( srry not at home at the moment)
and the memory voltage is at 1.65 volts

i want to hit 4ghz but its failing as soon as i trying bumping it up
once i get home i will post the memory multiplier etc
i believe its at 6/16

what do i need to do to hit 4ghz?

im going through the same thing, i just got my 930 stable at 4.2Ghz a few hours ago.

Im new to the intel overclocking but i will try and help.

Your CPU voltage seems high already so i would start boosting the QPI voltage, i think you are safe up to 1.4v or so, i have mine set to 1.325V as thats what i needed for 4.2Ghz.

Make sure you drop the mem divider enough so that your ram is not out of spec.

I would try it at 200 Bclock and keep upping the QPI voltage till you get it stable, at least till you get the QPI up to match the CPU voltage, then if you still cant get it to go raise them both in small amounts.

Ditto to the above. Your CPU voltage is super high for only 3.8GHz. I'm currently running at 4.0GHz stable with only 1.300v. That's probably why your idle temps are so high.

Make sure your memory divider is set appropriately like Rifterut said. That's what was keeping me from getting past 3.8GHz initially until I figured it out. I would try dropping your CPU voltage down a bit to reduce heat. Do you have SpeedStep disabled? HT enabled?

speedstep disabled and ht is still enabled
i am still a bit confused about the way mem divider ratio works
what should i be setting it too

Turn HT and all power saving features off, lower mem a lot to take it out of the equation...

Leave vcore at 1.37~, thats' already high enough, I wouldn't raise it above 1.375 on air really...I'd try to lower it to 1.35 or 1.325 if i were you.

Raise VTT way up, to between 1.325 and 1.35.

Turn CPU PLL DOWN from the approx 1.8 stock to somewhere between 1.35 and 1.5 (your mileage may vary, I find 1.45 is a good spot). (shhh, it's a secret, lol).

If that doesn't get you 4ghz stable then get better cooling so you can raise vcore and vtt more. I wouldn't go above 1.4 for either though unless you know what you're doing.

i am on liquid cooling , not air , i dont have PLL option on my mobo
what should be my mem and uncore divider at? thats the part i dont really understand
and vtt voltage
i have cpu voltage/ioh voltage/ mem voltage/ and qpi voltage
options thats it

uncore should be as low as possible, i think there are onyl 2 options, take the lowest one. As for memory if you have 1600 ram then a 4x divider is perfect for a 200Bclock as it will run exactly at 1600. If you have 1333 ram then go for the one below the 4x divider.

so i lowered the mem multi to 6 and the uncore up to 18
the cpu voltage is down to 1.3 v but the qpi voltage is at 1.4v
temps on idle are at 50C with prime95 it was hitting as high as 88C

Hm, something is seriously off if your temps are that high on liquid cooling with only 1.3v.

not every 920 can hit 4
Seems the most relevant thought has escaped the OP, since this post seemed to have been largely ignored.

Reaching X GHz is never a guarantee. If you are pumping voltage and handling excess temps already but still can't reach a particular GHz target, then perhaps it is simply impossible for your particular chip.

Not meant to discourage you from trying, merely to prepare you for a very real possibility.

He is not on liquid cooling, at least not in the way you used the term here. He is using a Corsair H50, which amounts to equal to high-end air-cooling, not really water-cooled levels.

no its seems fine on a H5O.

Did you really expect more from a out dated product which was replaced with the H7O?

And as others have said... thats not a real water setup.
A real water setup, you fill with you construct on your own, not pull out of a box, entirely pre-assembled.

i have hit 4ghz now on 1.3v but my qpi voltage is at 1.4v
its stable but idle temps are 48C and 60C load when i game

well i am still a bit concerned
cuz my dram freq is at 600hz
and the nb freq is at 3600hz
should i try downing the qpi voltage
and it does take my 2 trys to boot into windows sometimes,
like it starts up and right before windows it restarts then it goes into windows fine and works fine but when i installed the heatsink i did mix up the sata connections i think and my hdds are in raid could that be the prob?

if you changed the SATA ports around yes that could screw up a RAID array for sure, i would put them back to where they were.

3600Mhz NB is what it will be at 200 Bclock no way around it, unfortunatly intel did not give us lower dividers for that.

600Mhz(1200) dram is fine for 1333 ram, slightly less that rated speed. If you have 1600 rated memory you can try the next divider up and see how it goes.

Furthermore, people buy a CPU expecting to hit a certain overclock but they buy the cheapest power supply, ram and mobo available not thinking that those components can also hold back their overclock.

Just because someone posted a stellar overclock somewhere doesn't mean anyone/everyone will be able to duplicate it.

Very true. Some chips just don't go as high as others. Mine is rock solid at 4.0GHz 1.300v but won't take 4.1GHz even after upping voltages crazy high. Que sera, sera I guess.
