If that were the final price that's pretty nice as 920s are around that but I would put that towards a lightboost monitor or more RAMGood. Was out-bid at 265$
Hello. Would spending ~ 250$ on an i7 970 be worth it for a gaming rig?
I would expect so providing you get a decent price on a decent clocking cpu, the extra cores really come into their own for transcoding. See the Handbrake benchmarking thread, though they have taken down the scoreboard, you'll still be able to get an idea by browsing through the screenshots/posts. The 6 cores pretty much romped.Apologize for the hijack but don't see the value in starting a new thread since you have your answer and my question is related.
Curious because I am thinking about doing this upgrade to my i7- 920 DO x58.
If it was for a video rendering / transcoding rig....would that cost be worth it?? With no expectation to upgrade for three years until the Haswell-E multi cores drop in price.

Yes, it works great on that board (good power section). Cinebench 11.5 score usually 1 1/2 X whatever your score, Def worth the upgrade considering you can sell the 920
