Which one of those CPUs would be the best to get? Considering making a new build to replace my aging Athlon 64 x2 S939.

Or would it be best to wait for 6-core CPUs to come out? I hear they're coming out soon so I may wait until one comes out that is relatively cheap(~$300-400).

i7 920 is the most powerful of the three, albeit at little extra cost and heat.

I went with the Xeon X3440- the cheapest way to get one with hyperthreading. Works fine in any P55 mobo.

I considered the same a couple months ago. I think the Intel processors severely outclass AMD's offering, and I chose the i5 750 over the i7 920 simply because it's ~98% as fast, but is much more power efficient (my case is quite small).

If you only worry about CPU, get i5 750 cause it's cheaper, more power efficient, and performs just as fast. For me, motherboard is the deciding factor cause p55 has less pci-e slots, less memory slots so it's give me less options for future upgrades.

So it comes down to how you will use your computer, will u sli/crossfire, add raid cards, add sound cards, add bunch of other stuff, or will just just run plain vanilla rig. If you wanna keep it simple, i5 is the way to go, otherwise, get 920.

If you have pressing issues that involve six threads or more that Core i9 could be money in the bank.

What do you plan on doing with it?

What on earth do you plan to do with it? This will help greatly in helping you, along with your desired budget and other wishes in the realm of video, ram, hdd/sdd, etc.

One advantage to buying X58 is that it could increase the time interval between upgrades.

This could save you some money on OEM Operating system licenses.

Best advice is for you to wait for the 6 cores.

Then when the 6 cores come out, don't buy it. Wait for the 12 core to come out---and then buy that.

Core I7 920 is faster than phenom 965 and I5 has issues of overclocking
Go with core I7 920

It really depends on what you doing and budget. All of those 3 processors are good enough for gaming for example.

to the sarcastic comments others have posted.. lolz..

and no op you will not see a 300-400 dollar hexcore.

maybe 600-700, but definitely not 300-400

An OCed X4 965 is pretty much the best bang for the buck if you are solely into gaming. You can use the extra cash for not going Intel for a better video card...

Shit you serious?! That translates to ~1k NZD taking into account the 15-20% price premium of computer parts in this country. I was not hoping for a US$300 hex core, but I thought a reasonable starting price point would be ~$450USD. Oh well, I hope Bulldozer would help drive Intel CPU prices down in the future...

I would wish for the same thing, but I don't think it is going to happen. If Intel didn't even bother to reduce the prices of their lower-end offerings despite the beating that comparably priced AMD offerings gave them, then they will probably also not bother to reduce the prices of their higher offerings even if Bulldozer arrives. They just sell lots more volume, no matter how many times reviewers point out that some C2D and C2Q offerings are pretty much obsolete and senseless thanks to new AMD chips.
