gonna have to quit coming to dallas or start leaving my wallet at home...

these 950's have anything other than a higher multi to recommend them?

gotta love that the 'stock' voltage range goes to 1.375... i don't even have my 930 that i picked up at mc on my last trip here at that and i'm at 4ghz...

My friend and I were there Friday and got a 950 for $250. Ah, timing.

Wouldn't hurt to ask them to do a price match with themselves.

Not really. Pretty awesome for buying a new proc, not so awesome for replacing a 920/930 unless you are overclocking and your gear has low BCLK limits or something.

Dude's got me thinking about upgrading my 920. This is a great deal considering the Turbo mode is greatly improved in the 950.

Still the same Turbo mode. Turbo mode was greatly improved on socket 1156.

hitting bclk limit is a good reason to upgrade, but it is also nice for the non-oc guys who want a little more oomph.

personally, I plan to wait and see how low gulftown gets.

No pt in upgrading if you overclock. I have my 920 at 4.3...don't think a 950 will be any better, most likely worse.

Good for anyone that doesn't overclock or building a new system though.

I've noticed that a lot of people around here seem to be getting monster overclocks out of 920s and 930s.

4.2 is getting close to the thermal limits in most cases on air. 4.3 is outstanding if it's really 24/7 stable. 4.0 is a near certainty with adequate parts around it.

i7 950 will probably do a bit better than most i7's since it's guaranteed to be a d0.

i just replaced my 920 with the 950 i got at MC, doesn't hit 4ghz stable, even with turbo disabled and more volts. i have it at 3.6ghz and so far (1 week) pretty stable...will try 3.8ghz in a few days.

my 920 ran identical settings at 4ghz completely stable and it was a launch CPU from November 2008.

that's an ouch... now you're scaring me... and i'm off to dallas again today... maybe just get another $100 amd combo... or i may try something novel and not buy any pc parts i don't need...

Same. Sandybridge is definitely nice, but I'm sticking with my 920 and X58-UD3R w/4 sticks for the forseable future and will drop in a 980x (or some such) when they get cheap enough.

They will, if you're within your 30-day exchange period. I bought a 920 last year for $229 and they credited me the difference when they went on sale for $199. They didn't even ask to see the CPU, just the receipt.

I can confirm $199 price tag. I was just at microcenter this morning.

Also, they had 4 GB AData DDR3 1333 (9-9-9-24) black heatspreaders for $50. Awesome deal for a 4 gig kit. I grabbed two. Not sure if it's all microcenters or what but Paterson nj had em.
