i7 970 Bios & Turbo

So my Bios states speeds as if I were under a 25 multi, but in OS not one app like CPUz says I am using the 25 multi only 24x, even under load. Apparently I can use all 6 cores with the 25x according to the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. So what is the true reading?

i7 970, Win 7 64, EVGA E760 A1, CPUz, HWinfo64, etc.

Does CPU-Z show that 25X or 26X are available? Or does it show that 24X is the max?

You need a light load. Like Intel Burn Test set to 1 thread.

I was able to get my 4790K to run at the single core turbo speed using 1 thread, and the dual core turbo speed using 2 threads, with Burn Test.

The multiplier in CPUz shows (12-26) The Intel Extreme Tuning Utility says all 6 cores can be active at the 25x. When loaded CPUz only shows the 24x

EDIT: power config is on balanced, too. I just enabled CxE and still no 25 or 26 multi. I'm going to try n run the default speed and see if it will push 26x

EDIT 2: nothing

Under any sort of heavy load, you will only get the default multiplier, unless you change the BIOS settings to overclock the chip, iirc.

Normally, it's only going to go to "turbo" under light loads.

You need to set the BIOS up to let all six cores go to the 25 or 26 multiplier as the default, iirc.

Maybe the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility has got me thinking the wrong thing, or the board and bios just does not work as the ETU says :hmm:

Asus SaberTooth runs my X5650 @ 22X under full load (max is 23X). Gigabyte GAX58A-UD7 also.

Yeah, I think it was this Intel Tuning Utility (stress tester) that put the idea in my head. On its GUI it says all 6 cores can be ran at 25x. I don't ever recall it could do that but it got me thinking and I think it steered me wrong.

How is the system running anyways? Those boards help out at all?

I bumped it back to 4.6GHz I think it's stable. The Ram kit seems to be - was wondering if I needed a new kit but it looks like things are working out.

Has never stumbled or given me a minutes grief. I run it @4400 full load (4600 turbo) & It'll be busting out another Blu-ray iso tonight. The Gigabyte boards are feature rich, but Asus is king for overclocking

Thanks, and no offense, but i'm not installing evaluation software on my machine..

It's perfectly safe, and actually useful. No spyware whatsoever. It's the only evaluation software I have actually paid for in the end because it was so useful for me.

It will give you what you need to see what your multiplier and cpu are doing in real time, more accurately than any other software I've seen out there.

I'm sure it won't take a month to work out what you need from the software.

i7-970 supports 25x 6 cores active and 26x 2 cores active. At least C-state C3 should be enabled for 26x multi.

You could try running throttlestop software.

ThrottleStop should also give you the option to force the higher multi's in case your OS is not requesting them.

C-State reporting for C3 and/or C6 should be done from the BIOS in order for the OS to use them.

I've went into my bios and turned on both C3 and C6 on separate occasions/boots with speed step and turbo enabled, and nothing. I'm using HWinfo64 to observer the multi.

Post some screenshots of ThrottleStop. Open up the C State window to make sure your CPU is using the deeper C States when it is idle.

Run a single thread of the built in TS Bench and take another screenshot of ThrottleStop when the CPU is running this test. It is possible that the bios is not setting your CPU up correctly.

this.. i believe evga said the hell with it and didn't fix it

i've set my windows power scheme to Balanced. Ran everything at default speeds (Auto) enabled CxE, Turbo, Speed Step, and it will not hit any turbo numbers. Observed with HWinfo64
