Is that your board?

http://forums.evga.com/BL141E760A1-...ch-Support-Modification-w970-CPU-m872663.aspx

If so, the mod apparently involves connecting two pads on the board?

Oh my god THANK YOU!

Looks like I'll have to call in and have this fixed. I don't mind waiting plus maybe i'll have the thing fixed to support the Xeon processors. This is only a rev.1.0 board and rev 1.1 works with the xeons, i have 2, one in my other rig and an X5660 sitting around

I'm surprised no one in the eVGA forums mentioned anything

tearing the rig down now to send it in. they said they knew about the Westmere mod but not for the turbo, i'm sure they'll end up having both workable. I have a sweet little X5660 laying around that i might drop in the EVGA once it's back. I'd love to see how that thing will do.. then again i might sell it for a xeon with a 25 multi; maybe i'll just get another X5690 :hmm:

Sent the board off this afternoon around 3pm. The tech said "there is a Westmere mod" I said "I know but apparently the is a mod for turbo to work." He didn't understand so I referenced the evga forum post. I hope they know what they are doing. Maybe the Westmere mod will enable Turbo for the desktop 6 core chips. All I know is that I'm just excited to be getting this thing fixed. I almost bit the dust and bought a different X58 board off eBay. Who knows what you end up getting off abuseBay

I had to eat one of the GA-X58A-UD7 boards I sold on ebay. Guy sent it back claiming it didn't work (after I tested each one, I knew that was bs), and when I received it, he was correct, CPU didn't even get warm. Upon further inspection the back of the board had a milky residue around several mount holes, and even by the 12v. CPU supply area. He had spilled something on it while powered up, or his liquid cooling leaked. I sent pics to ebay, they investigated and I lost the case.. Had to replace the board, he got away with it :\ I have one left & not sure about selling it on ebay.. May just keep it.

That's why you have to have proof something works before you sell it. Take a video of it recording it in working condition with a close up of the serial number. There are a lot of scammers on abuseBay. Sorry that happened :\

When I get my board back I may consider unloading my X5660. I'm tempted to just see if a Xeon will work in it once it comes back, but like I said I'm basically more interested in having a working Turbo on the i7 970. A 25x would be sweet

that f*c%in pisses me off, the seller always gets screwed

i would even cuss out eBay in the video while I was making proof it worked "f*c& you eBay, it works"

edit: you would have to record the motherboard being booted (lights turning on, the posts), get the serial number off the board, record the cable going out the video card to the monitor and type a little message to eBay all in one video take

Appeals said, that I had to replace it. The spill could have been done after I received it. It still may be fixable if the bad VRM is replaced. I'll probably just sell it as broken/not working.. That's cool EVGA is hooking you up like that. An X5675 should lock at 25X & turbo 26 same as the 970..

when i sold an OCZ DDR2 kit back in the day, either someone stole it or the buyer lied about not receiving the kit. I went through alot. I mailed it through the post office with delivery confirmation! Had the manager at the post office branch speak with the ebay or paypal rep, they still screwed me. very few times have i felt that level of anger and it still gets to me after 15yrs I was out of a RAM kit and had to pay for the buyer to have it. I almost turned to screw my ebay and paypal account. I think i had a few notifications 2-3 weeks later telling me i had to reimburse the money. When you look at it, they should of made the buyer prove that he didn't receive the ram kit. i provided plenty of proof i mailed it and it being delivered

EDIT: hence the reason I have NO ISSUE USING VULGAR LANGUAGE WITH EBAY AND PAYPAL EVEN WHEN I HAVE PROOF AND AM IN THE RIGHT

Doesn't sell protection protect you from this when you have proof of postage from the post office?

Hmmm . . . the Gulftown processor . . . I was actually contemplating a system with that processor when it was "new on the scene." I never knew you could clock them that high, though . . . . :\

The Westmere EP Xeons actually have better headroom for overclocking and are cheaper to purchase.

that policy might have been implemented recently.. i sold this kit back in early early 2000

edit: seller protection should be afforded just as buyer protection is, it's really stupid when eBay "offers" it to you as a seller or buyer

Yeah, I'm under the Intel 1.375v spec for that chip at 4.6GHz albeit 1.371v I'm sure I could get some higher numbers if I had better cooling. It's being cooled by a Megahalems. They are great chips. I don't want to push it beyond it's Vcore spec. If the board works with the Xeon I might push it to it's max. I think I did 4.8GHz or something close when doing Cinebench marks.. might have been lower. probably unstable but it passed CB 11.5

And with the preliminary DX12 reviews I'm glad I switched to 6 core machines, specially the gaming rig

I have no problems running them at up to 1.5 volts peak. After that temps become a problem.

The Turbo mod looked relatively easy for a DIY to tackle.

Unfortunately, now I can't seem to locate the thread that illustrated how to do it.

I am wondering if it's the same mod as the Xeon mod for Rev 1.0 boards. I've seen those threads and pics but never was there a mention about it fixing Turbo

Ran everything at default speeds (Auto) enabled CxE, Turbo, Speed Step, and it will not hit any turbo numbers. Observed with HWinfo64

For maximum turbo boost to work correctly, C1E enabled or disabled is not important. You need to enable either C3 or C6. RealTemp or ThrottleStop can report what C States are enabled. Most other software does not.

CPU-Z and HWiNFO do not necessarily report the maximum multiplier correctly when the CPU is loaded. RealTemp does. The RealTemp - XS Bench test is a single threaded load so you can test for your maximum multiplier.

Just got my board back today. Well my Xeon (X5660) works in the EVGA now, still neither chip will Turbo or lock the Turbo multiplier in.
