Think of the 8 core as a pressure valve. If enough pressure from AMD or 9000 series too late, release pressure valve. Schedule is dependent on outside factors hence should not be advertised from the start. Makes sense?
A bird in the hand...
I think if Intel had an 8C desktop chip in their pocket, we'd probably know about it.
The only thing I have seen for it is that XTU errata leak.

They can cobble one together in no time.
For desktop?Come on! They wouldn't even have to pretend to care about TDP, just make it unlocked.
But I for one seriously doubt that intel will go beyond the 6 core chip for many years to come, they stuck to quad until now even though the FX was better in some multithreaded benches, they don't need to go any higher for mainstream customers.
The crazy people and those who actually need it for work are still going to happily pay the premium for HEDT.

Notice the lack of 8 core Coffee Lake on that road map and that this rumor thread is 8/16 9th gen? Yeah I don't think it's coffee at all. Cascade Lake X is lameo. Should be the same 18c on x299, 14nm++ refresh.

There is a worst case scenario. Intel could still release Coffeelake 8C but in 2019 which would suggest that Icelake won't come in 2019 or at least not until very late in 2019. The strange thing is that there is no Z390 specified in this Roadmap.

FanlessTech said 9th gen is all Ice Lake and we saw the AIDA64 changelog include the 9000-series SKUs, so I think 8C CFL either was never real or was scrapped.

I would count the slides mention of "300 series chipset" as Z390 being part of that.

Wow, 8700k all through 2018? Intel is making a mistaaaake.

If it allows Icelake desktop to arrive in early 2019, perhaps not. Though it can go either way. They are quite likely keeping it close to the chest. Intel roadmaps seem to be changing almost monthly. That's a sign of big struggle.

Making a completely new die isn't like copy and paste in paint, you know?

If it wasn't planned in some form few years ago it would have been not possible to arrive at all. At latest when first signs of 10nm troubles were surfacing, or early as when they were having 14nm problems, Kabylake and Coffeelake had to be thought up.

I'm sure with the engineering resource available at Intel it's not that difficult. The architecture easily scaled from 4 to 6 cores.

If sticking to 14nm++, lower the base frequency and possibly up the ring frequency (if ring were a bottleneck) - plus there's the option to increase stock memory frequency.

. Maybe they will add 8 more PCI-e 3.0 lanes to the CPU so the new platform will have the Intel X299 and AMD X399 platforms premium possibility to run two VGAs @PCIe 3.0 x8 + two SSDs @PCIe 3.0 x4.
I for one would LOVE about 16 more pcie lanes to share between 4 slots. I have the 6700k currently which only has 16x pcie lanes for the all of the cards. There are a number of youtube videos showing that the 1080 ti suffers when only given 8x pci lanes. You can be sure the 2080 ti will be significantly more retarded by only having 8x lanes. I don't encrypt videos so 4 core or 24 core doesn't matter much to me as games don't really benefit much (if at all from the extra cores). I do however have a 16x video card, an 8x raid controller and an 8x network card and would really like more lanes. Please intel don't force gamers to buy $1000 cpus only to pay more for power, require more cooling AND get worse gaming performance. How about giving gamers a little love for a change. Intel is its own worst enemy when it comes to encouraging people to look at the threadripper which has 64 pcie lanes. Who knows when the next batch arrives how they'll fair for gaming. I may have my first AMD processor since my first 386-40.
