Prelude to 2011 prices? Not at all. That's the usual price for the latest & greatest Intel Extreme edition CPUs.

that's only $50 more than the previous one.

Yeah, but it's $700 more than the i7-2600k, which is the problem.

The previous one was pre-SB, when the price made at least some sense.

somewhat after debut of SB, all the 1366 EX chips seems less exciting, all eyes on the upcoming socket 2011. I wonder if there are actually people buying these chips.

IMO all 1366 chips are a waste of money anymore. You're paying for Old tech

Nehalem?

I guess Intel can benefit from those who cannot get a SB.. There will be buyers, as always..

OP apparently has never seen Intel's pricing scheme. QX9770 was $1500.

Say what you want but I thought it may come out higher. Prices may come down when 2011 comes out but prob not much. SB was just cheap at launch for what you get and not like Intels other launches.

I wonder how many people actually will spend the money on this chip. 1% of 1366 owners? 5%?

It's $50 over MSRP. EggOwned again.

Why would someone want to downgrade to SB instead of getting this? Encoding freaks need the extra two cores. This is Gulfown not Nehalem. Same B1 stepping as 980X. Not impressed with the two I ordered so they never even left the dock!

I have a nearly year old 980X that does 4.41GHz with 1.305 volts, 24/7 on air. Not too shabby. Both 990s I was told could do that but failed at the same voltage. Just not worth it for an identical chip IMO.

Unless you need to run 4 cards i don't see SB as a downgrade for 1366. And why? Because a SB setup isn't 1050 dollars?

I'm not discussing gaming here I'm talking about real work. Of course it makes little sense in the view of gaming. Anything over 3 cards is a waste because there's no room for the RAID controller!

Folks that put 100GFLOPS worth of CPU in their box and have a pair of SSDs in RAID0 on ICH = LOL. Whatever floats their boat I suppose.

I cannot see the point in them releasing the 990X when it would seem like the 980X was already top of the line for many work tasks. After hearing about both Ruby's and Aigo's experiences, it just seems like Intel is trying to make a few more dollars off of people that want the best of the best. Sad part is they are on the same stepping and sometimes perform on par or lower than the 980X.

Exactly. And why not? They are a business.
