....That's very tempting indeed. Doesn't appear to be reference, but there's still a chance it'll have some voltage control.

And for 350 it's a better price/performance part than a 5850 ignoring overclocking.

Ok so how does the non reference 5870 compare to a reference 5850? I take it an OC'ed 5850 can be slightly faster than the stock 5870, but would there be any advantages, features etc. that would make the 5870 better? And on a non reference 5870 can they still be decently overclocked?

Very curious to the answer to this as well - as that 5870 for ~$350 is looking mighty tempting right now.

The 5870 is faster stock (duh! ), but probably has less overclocking headroom. Which one will be faster after overclocking? That's pretty much luck of the draw, but my money would be on the 5870.

Just ordered everything else on the list... including the HIS 5870. Apparently that is a really good cooler on there and does vent out of the case.

It's all put together and running! Thanks for the help to everyone. Ended up with the i7 860, 4GB ram, 1tb samsung spinpoint, antec 900, asus 23" 1080p, gigabyte ud-3, antec earthwatts 650, and HIS 5870. All I need now is some aftermarket cooling for the CPU, everything else cools very good but the CPU runs a tad warm. Will post pictures soon!
