Someone on Xtremesystems got a i5 2500K to 5Ghz on air on an Intel board. Got it to boot and validate on cpu-z anyway. Seems like a capable overclocker to me. Edit: now 5.2 and some superPi. Cool! hope the i7s do as well.

Me to. but till they have been out for a few months we wont have a large enough base to draw any conclusions.

Do we have anyone that works at MC on this board? I would be curious when they will start selling the SB chips.

I'm surprised you guys haven't checked out the Inpai reviews at Xtreme Systems already.

Pretty big gains in SC2

Intel is expected to announce Sandy Bridge on Jan 5 at CES, and the first chips are supposed to be available on Jan 9.
Officially, thats the correct answer. Unofficially...this showed up on my doorstep today, and they're not supposed to be sold until 1-9-2011 either.

yeah... get a 3 year old processor with an overinflated cost rather than one coming out in a month or so...

My ASUS P8P67 PRO Intel P67 LGA 1155 should arrive on Monday (via excaliberpc). I would have purchased it thought buy.com, but it was actually coming from ElectronicaDirect, which has terrible resellerratings reviews.

I am local to MicroCenter so I think I'll go to Church on Saturday afternoon, so I can be there bright and early on Sunday morning, January 9th.

Best regards,

Am I right in reading that RAM clocked higher than DDR3-1600/PC3-12800 will be pointless for Sandy Bridge since almost all the overclocking will be done with the multiplier?

i work at MC in georgia. We usually get stuff in a couple days before release. Nothing too crazy. Surprisingly no 69xx yet from AMD

Correct, If Intel catches anyone breaking the street day several heads would roll. Third party motherboards are not nearly as regulated.

Intel Premier Partners have had production CPUs/Motherboards since the start of Dec. They are not allowed to sell or post benchmarks with them as well as a long list of other restrictions. This is designed for them to use internally to prep for the launch so their products like Dell, HP, ect are fully tested and ready on launch day.

OP - just keep putting up more threads and nail-biting posts and before you know it, SB will be here! Its one freakin month! How is it such a "nail biter" that you can't wait? You act as if they will vaporize all the 950s on Jan 8th.

THIS IS NOT AN EITHER/OR DECISION! In 1 month, you can buy SB or you can still buy i7 950.

I don't get it.....:\

I bolded the most important bit.
OP, wait 1 month then make a decision based on price and performance at that time.

So far the boards that are in the system at MC. None on hand though, and of course pricing will usually change by launch

Having paid $200 after shipping for mine, LOL.

I ordered my i7-920 from mwave 11-15-08 (official release date 11-17-08) so the street date isn't 100% absolute, either. It was an ebay deal (I got MS cash back on it) and actually made money when I sold it a couple months later.

Here's how I see it:

Right now I have a case and PSU (Corsair hx850). I definitely want 2 GPUs (gtx 570 sli or hd 6950 cf) so I MUST HAVE full SLI/CF (thats at least 2 x PCI-E 2.0 x16). Absolutely no 16x +8x crap. If Motherboard manufactures continue as they have with lga 1156 and lga 1155, only the top of the line lga 1155 boards will have full 2 x GPUs (like the Gig UD7). Those boards are well over $300. In contrast, even midrange lga 1366 boards (ex Gig UD3 rev 2) have 2 x PCI-E 2.0 x16 for around $200.

Now for the i7 950 (3-3.6 ghz safely) vs i7 2600k (3.4-4.4? ghz safely)......

The i7 950 scores 6,331 in PassMark and the 2600k gets 9,870 which is 56% higher only due to Passmarks weighted clock speed scoring. - http://cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

The 2600k will (if true) outperform the 875k and use 35 watts less
http://techiser.com/core-i7-2600k-sandy-bridge-reviews-benchmarks-leaked-130644.html
This could be important since Im trying to run sli 570 and a 50watt cooling setup off

So for True dual GPUs your looking at 950/MB ($450) or 2600k/MB($650).

My common sense says i7 950 but my enthusiast side says 2600k.

Your assessment that SLI/XFire absolutely requires x16/x16 is off. It may not run at 100%, but 99% is pretty damn good and significantly cheaper.
