i945G & nvidia

I need to do some experiments with Linux graphics. Or more specifically kernel-level mode settings. I need to use the DRM for it. http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DRM

Ignoring the technical issues of the above link, my immediate issue is that I can´t get my on-board intel 945G graphics card to work IF my nvidia card is plugged in. I need to use the intel IGP for video. I physically removed the VGA cable from the nvidia output and inserted it to the motherboard one, but I get nothing on-screen.

The only way it seems I can get output (from 945) is to open up my PC and remove the nvidia card. I don´t want to keep the nvidia card out permanently as my family uses the Windows on it for gaming.

I am hoping that this is not some ´feature´ of my motherboard to disable the IGP when a discrete PCIe card is plugged in.

Any thoughts, guys?

most, if not all motherboards that have onboard video will disable that if a video card is added.

There's usually a BIOS option to indicate which GPU to use, if you set the IGP to be primary you might get your NVIDIA card to work.

That's exactly the problem Crusty. The option to select which card to use does NOT list the IGP.

I think it gets disabled when my nVidia is plugged in.

Looks like I'll be unplugging/plugging in my card for a few days now.

Do you think it'll damage the card, doing that ?
