Ordered one using paypal virtual credit card for security. Amex has a private payments option where Amex will generate a virtual credit card number for online use.

that drive is ancient. probably 4 platters. considering you can get a 20 gig drive for around $100 that is waaaay faster from a reputable source, maybe this isnt such a good deal. especially since almost no laptops or even external enclosures can take this

This drive may be 5400RPM BUT it is 17MM NOT 12.5MM which is way to big for most of todays laptops.

You can buy a cable adapter that will let you put this on a regular IDE Chain. I picked one up for 10 bucks at my local computer store and it works great for working on laptop hard drives or data recovery. Plugs right into a standard IDE cable.

The BBB doesn't even think much of this company. A quote from their report:

Bureau File Experience

We rate this company as having an unsatisfactory business performance record. Complainants allege deceptive business practices. Some customners complain shipping or re-stocking fees are excessive, are undisclosed until after the sale. Others allege they receive re-manufactured components when they ordered new merchandise. Most reportedly experience problems when attempting to return or exchange merchandise. Some customers claim they return defective or incorrect orders, and the company fails to send replacement items as agreed. The company responds to some complaints by taking steps to correct problems, or by issuing credits or refunds. Other complaints remain unaswered. We advise careful evaluation of the company's technical assistance, servicing, and refund and exchange policies prior to ordering products. Purchasers ship computers back at their own cost and often bear the burden of time lost without a computer. The Better Business Bureau does not endorse, recommend or disapprove of any product, serviqce or company.

I talked to their sales rep to cancel my order since it's a 17mm drive (which he verified) and wouldn't fit in my laptop. He said that they were sold out since about 4pm yesterday and that all orders placed today would be automatically cancelled. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but I guess that's life.

<< not secure very dangerous. >>

Please explain how it is dangerous??

The general public is so ignorant(sorry) about credit cards and security it pisses me off. The credit card companies have successfully running a propaganda campaign to make us think we have to keep an eagle eye on our credit cards.

Well, guess what, you don't have to worry about that, unless you are irresponsible enought to not pay attention to you credit card statement/charges. If my wallet was stolen and all my cards were stolen and maxed out and they thieves charges $50,000 the most I can be responsible for is $50 per card, which many card companies don't charge.

Getting credit card numbers is very easy, and just think how often you give your credit card to a total stranger while they run in a back room(i.e. restaurant) to process it..

The one thing you do need to worry about is having your identity stolen. Not protecting info like your SS#, DL#, mother's maiden name, and othe rinfo can compromise this, though most of that info is still easy to obtain.

Anyone get a shipping confirmation, or a charge to their card even?

I just got this message which both pissed me off and had me roling on the floor simultaneously:

---
THE IBM HARD DRIVES THAT YOU ORDERED ARE OUT OF STOCK DUE TO THE LARGE DEMAND. YOUR ORDER WILL BE CANCELLED. SORRY ABOUT THE INCONTINENCE.
---

Ya know they are lying about being out of stock, they even admit to trying to piss all over us!

It's still a big hassle to have your card # cancelled. Some of us have automatic billing for other services that would need to be updated. Or you might have other legitimate orders (other pending hot deals?) out that would be cancelled. The time loss can be incredible. But I agree, most of the online fault with credit card theft results from unsecured vendor databases, not because of non-SSL submission pages.

I got the same email. I just emailed them back and asked them what the fu<k incontinence had to do with anything & told them their site
sucked and they needed a secure server.

INCONTINENCE

n 1: involuntary urination or defecation [syn: incontinency] 2: indiscipline with regard to sensuous pleasures [syn: dissoluteness, self-gratification]

generally speaking, stay away from that place.

They shipped me used, broken Dell pulls TWICE when I ordered from them.
I guess you learn your lesson.
