Ahhh, I wasn't sure, so I set up a new account, with new e-mail address and credit card account. Good to know though...

If you have an American Express Blue, you can get a program that spits out a unique CC number for each purchase. I'm currently applying for mine...

BigDave,
Whats the thing your applying for called? I have the Blue card, and that'd be awesome if I could use a unique CC number for each purchase. Lemme know. Thanks!

I couldn't find anything about it on the American Express website. But this was printed on a bargain website:

Blue Card From Amex 19-Sep-00
Want to take advantage of this one time use card number? (You run an app and it spits out a random one time use Amex card number.) Makes your transactions secure and you get new credit card #'s without much effort! Blue from American Express has no annual fee, 0% introductory APR, Blueloot Rewards. Most importantly they have Return Protection so you can return stuff even if the merchant won't take it back. Best Value Guarantee so if the price drops within 60 days of purchase, you'll be protected upto $250 an item, $1000 back max a year. Update: Blue for Business does not offer all these, so still to Blue. (Thanks Steve)

Let me know if you find anything else...

Just want to make sure, is ATA100 backwards compatible?
In other words, can I use my old ATA 33 controller?

Yes any drive that is ATA-66 pr higher is backwards compatible with your ATA-33 controller. In some, or most cases though, you will have to download a utility from the hard drive manufacturer to "downclock" the drive so-to-speak to make it work at ATA-33 speed. You should check to make sure you have the utility to do that or the drive might not work properly.

Are you talking about that gadget American Express gives you if you own Blue? I got one and I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing but I believe the deal for this ended on their website some time ago. It would be nice to receive unique CC#'s since we can always make new e-mail addresses to go with new purchases at buy.com and other stores.

Thanks, Btaisho for the info. I've found a program on IBM's website that will allow me to do it.

I wanted to use the 30off coupon too. So, I signed up under a different e-mail address (same cr card, billing, and shipping info.) (I deleted my buy.com and us.buy.com cookies befoe doing this) It seems to have worked. I got one of the Quantum 9.1 7200 U160 drives for 125 after coupon and rebate.

Nailed it. Got the 30GB IBM, with PointClick 5% and $30 off
1st time customers.

And to think, I almost ordered that drive a few days ago when
it cost even more. My Abit KT7Raid is going to love this drive.

Ranger X - The deal for the free smart card reader is still going on, free up until the end of this year. When I requested one, it came within 4 days! Neat lil thing to go along with such a slick looking card.

Here's a c|net article describing the AMEX disposible CC number idea. Said it the feature would be out in about a month I believe.

And to keep this message related to the thread, I ordered this hard drive on the 13th, during the last Free Shipping days for $129.xx ($30 coupon). Order status says it's "Sent to Warehouse",... been sending it to the warehouse for about a week now.

If i could, I'd jump in on this again and pick up a second drive to run RAID.

I have the 75GXP it is the quietest drive I have ever owned(can't even hear it access). It is also the fastest. My 7200 rpm Maxtor comes in at 15000 on Sandra 2000 and the IBM comes it at 19980 almost 20000! I'd say it's better! Also I have mine on an Asus P2B-F with only ATA33 support. Yes it is backwards compatible and I had do do nothing at all. Their utility is for older motherboards that have problems with the speed of the drive and even supporting ATA33. I give this drive 2 thumbs up, and would recommend.

Amex has an option called "Private Payment" available to all cardholders, not just Blue, that allows you to generate a unique CC number that's valid for 30 - 67 days, depending on when you create it relative to your billing cycle. You have to be registered to manage your accounts online, that's where you set it up. No fee for the service, don't know if there's a limit on how many CC numbers you can generate. Sounds like just the thing for the Buy.com new customer discount coupons!

For those unfamiliar with this drive, Ananadtech reviewedit a while back and it gave some impressive results.

<Flamebait, Preach, OT, Troll, etc.>
Please consider the ethics of using the AMEX disposable cc# to screw over Buy.com. It's one thing to use every coupon available in search of good deals, but blatant fraud is something else. Those who feel that its ok to get away with anything they can are pretty well represented in this thread. Not everyone agrees with that mentality. Buy.com has always provided me with reasonable prices and excellent service. While I feel there are a few business that may have earned a good screwing (Amazon and $#@!#% variable prices), Buy.com doesn't really make that list.

The link provide has a different price, so I guess they upped the cost. It is now $163.95. Still a good deal? Anyone know if the price will drop again in the next batch of drives?
Also, thanks everyone for letting me know that its just credit card numbers, not accounts that work at buy.com.

Yup, looks like they changed the prices. Heres't the current prices:

45GB OEM: $216.95
30GB OEM: $163.95
20GB OEM: $144.95
15GB OEM: $103.95

Those are all still pretty decent prices... However, I tend to agree with one of the other posters, and using the $30 coupon repeatedly does seem kinda... I dunno.. immoral or something. I'm pretty sure they're not making a $30 profit on those drives at that price either...

the price is probably up because of the free shipping. I dont think they are taking a loss on anything, so save the tears.

Well, I got the lower price and the free shipping. They probably modified it after they realized what a great deal we were getting...

I'm sure Buy.com isn't losing money overall, but I can pretty much guarantee that they aren't making $30 of profit on those hard drives. Those are pretty much the lowest prices ANYWHERE, with free shipping... They're probably losing money on the drives coupled with that coupon. I'm sure they make it up in other sales though...
