Hey all,

I have a 40gb IBM 60GXP... and it works fine.. speeds are great.. so is the silence.. except for some random clicking that I hear like once a day... at random occasions. First I associated this to spinup/spindown but it happens even when the HD is working away. It doesnt cause crashes, it doesnt affect speed.. it just.. "clicks".. I ran the IBM HD fitness util.. results were fine. Ran a surface test - results were fine...
Is my drive dying on me and I just don't know it or is this a "feature"?

Sincerely,

maxxy

I have 4 75GXP drives, and if it makes you feel any better, I've had all of them click on my like that before =). Have never had any faults, crashes, or integrity issues related to the clicking either. From what I gathered, it usually happened when the drive was reaching the maximum of the ATA/100 throughput, ie on short writes and quick data bursts between drives.

I also listened to all the wierd "noises" that IBM provides on their website as to faults in HD's, and none of them matched the clicking that I heard.

I think this is a "feature." ^_^

It's good to see someone posting a message about the 75GXP series without the requisite 'avoid at all costs' adder.

I've been running 4 - 45g 75gxp's in a 0+1 array 24x7 for well over a year now without so much as a hiccup. NTM the 3 other identical drives in a hotswap bay for backups.

I have heard this also. I never heard it until I added a WD 20 with the IBM. I just assumed it was the WD. It happened randomly. But come to think of it I haven't heard it do that for a while.

Hmmm... come to think of it... this never started until I added my WD 10GB to it as slave... could be the reason?

Those drives are power hungry.. I had the same problem till I put them on thier own power leads..problem then went away. I did have a new 61.4GB drive die on the first day, but no other problems after replacement. Make sure the drives have adequate cooling as well.
