AT recommends this drive, but I read there is a class action suit going on over mass failures of this product. I have had IBM HDs for long time without problems and like htem for there extra quiet performance. I have a hard time beleiving AT would recommend a product that is failing in droves...

Now I'm looking for a couple of new QUIET drives for a RAID setup - recommendations?

Not everyone has developed problems with their hard drives, just more than usual amounts of hard drives from that model have died, and you hear about it... Anandtech recommended it before all this crap happened.

For now, I'd suggest anything but IBM... my personal favorites are western digitals, but you can try whatever you like besides IBM.

thanks - its looking like WD. The 8MB cache looks appealing even if the price doesn't. Since I am looking for two drives for RAID I was hoping to find a fast modern smaller unit - but it seems the market is still bigger, bigger, bigger. Can't imagine what I would do with 240GB of storage...

I see a Hot Deal going on the 80GB version - think I'll go for that - now I only have 160GB to fill...

Here is my story.

I had an IBM Deskstar 75GXP but the moment I heard the problems I threw it on eBay.

2 weeks later the buyer complained that the drive broke and fried. Being the good guy I told him I would take his drive back and he would get a full refund including costs for sending it back. Of course the buyer could have killed the drive himself, but I have some what faith in people.

I now hate IBM and their drives. It also made me realize how often IBMs fail. I have had hard drives that got hit against the wall or a medium tower ATX case fell right on top of it (surely jolting) and they worked fine.

IBMs I have just seen fail without warning/reason.

Where'd did u see a good deal on the WD800JB? Btw, do go for the WDs. They are quieter than the IBMs and run cooler, not mention awesome performance. I should have listened instead of buying an IBM 60GXP Now it is on the verge of breaking down after 10 months...

I personally agree with the recommendation for 80 GB Western Digital SE Drives. Nothing like an 8 MB Cache to zip you along...

BTW: I've had my IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30Gb for ages with 0 problems. I don't know why so many others "in the family" are so prone to just plain die.

I'm sad!

Just get a usernet program & go to alt.binaries.......

You'll fill that sucker up fast.

I'm stuck in the middle. I've used both WD and IBM. First I had a 40gb 45gxp, and now i currently run two 800jb's in RAID0 and two 75GXPs in RAID 0 as well. Never had a problem with the IBM drives, but the WD drives are certainly quieter and faster. Been running the 75GXPs for over a year, and my 45GXP from 2.5+ years ago still hums along too... I guess I got lucky from what I read here...
Bottom line: the WD JB line cannot be beat.

neutralizer, ABS Computer and Nutrend both have the 800JB for $108 with free Fedex saver shipping.... and the ever popular Newegg is $109 with free Fedex saver shipping as well.

Here's something new I learned about websites nowadays - don't believe everything you read.
Most of these websites pull recommendations out of their a$$es "oh... this drive had 0.1 mb/s faster transfer rate - its the best drive I've seen! it's also quiet..."

IBM 75GXPs, 60GXPs, and 120 GXPs are pieces of sh*t... I'd take a Macintosh before I'd buy another IBM product.

I guess I was pretty lucky with the IBM 75GXPs since mine is over a year old and still haven't had any problems with it. Once I heard of problems with the drive I did switch it with a western digital, but right now the IBM is on another machine as it's main drive without problems. Not sure how long it would last though.

Obviously they weren't all bad - but enough that the probability of failure made them a product for the cautious to avoid. Presumably IBM actually tested a few before putting the design into mass production - many of them must be reasonably durable.

In any case I picked up a couple of WD800JBs from NewEgg, and am quite happy with performance.
