oh, i don't think there are any warranties on OEM drives from IBM. Only on retail drives.

There are three types of drives from IBM:

Options by IBM Retail Box 3 year warranty

OEM Bare drive warrantied by IBM for 3 years

OEM drive sold to manufacturers, warrantied by the manufacturer and not IBM.

Definitely make sure you know what you are ordering.

It's not that your cpu takes a performance hit with raid on, it's that the highpoint controller uses software raid, not hardware. That's why SCSI raid cost that much, it's got it's own processor to do the job.

ibm will warranty bare/oem drives, but will not warranty drives that they make that are supposed to be in other boxes, ie if it were sold to gateway and was then pulled and sold to you. because gateway takes care of their own rma's and such on their hd's and ibm doesn't cover them (probably makes costs smaller for manufacturers like gateway)

Mwave is a good company, and good people. I live all the way out in Virginia, but have bought 1,000's of bucks worth of stuff from them. They are usually not the lowest on pricewatch, but by the time you add shipping they are usually close

Ok, this is why RAID speeds up the system in a mediocre type of way.

Say you start a program and all the data is on one disk. The computer is limited to the speed of that one disk.
What RAID does is that it splits it into two disks. Not a mirror image but different parts of the program.
Imagine it this way.

You need a few bytes on cylinder 25 but it is on cylinder 52 and still needs some of the data on 52. RAID allows two or more disks to carry data on seperate disks allowing the other hard drive to access the data that would normally be on the other cylinders.

That is not entirely accurate, nor is it a complete explanation. But it generally breaks it down. IDE RAID sux at it big time while SCSI RAID rocks.

Another recommendation of mwave.com. I've bought from them more times than I can remember (TBird 900 bundle, a couple of HDs, parts for entire systems, a CD-ROM drive, etc...) and have NEVER had a problem that I even had to bother contacting them about.

Btw, IDE raid is a joke. Any "benchmark" that shows it performing so and so close to SCSI, etc, apparently doesn't take into consideration real world use. IDE Raid="Synthetic" Performance boost.

I have ordered from MWave for Pick-up and yes they do have good prices and selection but I wouldn't say MWave rocks. I didn't like the fact that the employees took their time helping people and the worse part is they charge you a fee to pick up an item. I think this is rediculous because they save money on packaging and labor having someone do the work packaging an item and taking it to the shipping company (if they don't come and pick it up). They aren't bad but "rocks" is overstating it.

I've bought lots of stuff from multiwave and the last order is the only one I had a problem with, the Soyo 6BA IV motherboard was in a retail box in a bag with nothing else...no driver disk, cables, nothing. Not that big a problem since I got the manual and drivers at the Soypo web site, but... I contacted them by email and they said they are mailing everything that is supposed to come with it. We'll see, it's not here yet but that was only about Tuesday I got the email that said they were mailing the stuff.

I bought the 45G'ers from GoGoCity.com for 146. OEM drives, they say 3 year warranty, someone said they aren't. I dunno, I don't care. IBM drives, if they work outta the box seem to work for 5+ years easy. I got 6 of their SCSI drives and only now is one of them showing signs of failing, after 5+ years. Not bad in my opinion.

45G drives * 2 + 30 for overnight shipping (expensive maybe, but not unreasonable). Those with a Abit board and Raid...90G of ATA-100 smokin pleasure. Well worth my money, I can get rid of my massive SCSI chain now (10 devices )
