IBM and Maxtor HDs not working together

Hi, i just got my new 7200 40 gig maxtor yesterday and was planning on copy everything from my old 10gig IBM hd to the new drive. for some strange reason, i can't get those them to work. first, i ran fdisk and created a partition followed by a format. i then attached it to the IBM(which is the master) as the slave. when the comp booted, windows wouldn't boot, citing that himem.sys was missing. BTW, the old IBM is partitioned into 2 5 gig drives. when i looked on the different drives, my old C: drive stayed as the old C:, the new Maxtor became the new D: and the old D: is now my E: drive. Since that didin't work, i tried attached the Maxtor as a master on the second IDE channel. same results as above... so, i detached the old IBM drive and installed win98 on the new Maxtor drive. after win98 is installed, i tried to attach the IBM as a slave. win98 booted, but the old drive couldn't be seen. i tried putting IBM as the master on the second channel and again, the drive did not show up. so now, i can't copy my old HD because i can't get the two drives to show up together. the only solution i can't think of is going to a friend's house and do the file transfer through a 3rd HD. can anyone help me with this issue? thanks a lot!

I would try checking the jumper setting on both drives.
Some drives have a "Master Only" setting as well as a "Master with Slave Present" setting. The Master Only setting will not recognize a slave at all.

very strange.

i have an IBM 13 gigger, 7200rpm, ATA66 as a master and a 30 gig Maxtor, 7200rpm, ATA66, for video editing with no problems. the first time i installed the drive, i copied the IBM over with no problems (for backup), then did a reload and transferred the stuff back i needed, then wiped the Maxtor clean and it just sits there, works everytime i need for video, never a problem.

is one of these drives an ATA33 and one a ATA66 on a UDMA33 controller? sometimes you have to add a little proggie or fix to get the 66 drive to revert to 33 and work with the slower drive on a UDMA m/b.

just some thoughts.

well, the IBM 10 gig is ATA33 and the Maxtor is ATA100 and both of them are running off of the BH6. hmm... i've never encountered a problem like this. thanks

BTW, the two drives are recognized by the MB when booting up. i'm just not sure why the new drive is being designated as D: as opposed to C: or E:. i think everything will work fine if i can get the Maxtor to use the drive letter E:.

the master drive's primary partition is always C. the second drive's primary partition is always drive d. The rest of the extended partition takes precidence next then back to second drive's extended. If you have partition magic you can fdisk the second drive without any primary partitions and make it all extended. That will make your IBM as c and d then your new maxtor as e.

I have read people doing this with fdisk on the windows boot disk. I have tried without success. I don't know if the version matters or I wasn't doing it right.

i heard that from my friend last night as well. he's a PC tech and when i told him i was having trouble having my hard drives working together, he immediately asked me if one of them was IBM. from what he told me, IBM drives are notorious for not working with other drives. so anyway, i copied everything through his machine and now i'm going to have to sell the IBM. thanks for all the help guys. i appreciate it.

Try swapping the cable headers only in the drives as sometimes that works, but I dont know why!
