IBM announced its 15k rpm drives a long time ago. I can't seem to find them in the market place. I'm looking for the 36GB drive. Anyone know where to find these drives and at what prices?

I have been told that the Seagate Cheetah x15, also 15000 rpm, cannot be made in 36GB size due to architectural constaints. That sounds a bit bogus to me, so I'm not sure I can trust that tidbit. Anyone know about this?

The current generation Seagate X15 drive is the ONLY 15,000 rpm drive out there right now and is only available in 18.2GB. Some time this summer, Seagate will be releasing their second generation 15K drive this summer, called the X15-36LP. This drive will come in both 18 and 36GB versions. IBM should also be releasing their first 15K attempt, the 36Z15, this summer. This drive will also come in both the 18 and 36GB versions.

Actually, IBM has 15K available in both 9 and 18 Gig flavors as does Seagate. Got a couple at work a few weeks ago. (IBM)

The Seagate X15 is limited to 18Gig because of the size of it's platters. To make the drive spin so fast they cut the platters down to a 2.5" diamater instead of 3.5". That makes it a whole lot harder to get more size out of it.

Bozo1,

How do you like these drives? Are they quiet? Did you get the 18's or the 9's? do you know if the 36MB drives are available anywhere? Also, where did you get the drives or what did you have to pay?

... thanks.

We got the 18GB drives. As far as quiet, I can't tell - they are in our server room which is quite loud with all the systems, cooling, etc. They were purchased from Insight or CDW - not sure which.

CDW carries the IBM 15k drives, but they are the proprietary Netfinity versions which aren't of any real use to most people here.

Thanks folks, Your info and opinions are very helpful. Thanks to this discussion I am now buying an 18GB Cheetah x15 and will await the new 36GB by either Seagate or IBM to add on as my second drive, probably by fall 2001.

BTW this is going on a new rig based on:
Tyan K7 Thunder
dual Palomino 1.2Ghz
0.5 Gbytes Ram - Crucial registered ecc

I run continuous theoretical pricing models and personally developed tripwire indicator algorithms on real-time stock market and option market data feeds during the day. Concurrently I store the real-time data, updating my database. Then I do overnight historical regression analyses on the entire updated data base of historical market data.

:QSo you get the picture:
Continuous I/O to and from the internet (mainly from),
continuous disk transfers,
large dynamic data bases
(now several Gbytes and growing about a Gbyte per quarter),
continuous, cpu intensive computational processing,
continuously updating multiple screens for real-time presentation of different views of data and analysis results that unfold during the day,.

I'm hitting it hard on all cylinders and in every performance dimension:
I/O speed, storage size, disk speed, ram size and speed, cpu speed, fsb speed, multiple processing threads.

Thanks for your help. fab

I have the Seagate 15,000 18 gig 68 pin drive.
It runs cool and quiet within my case...all I hear are the case cooling fans.
