IBM Deskstar click of death

My hard drive made it nearly 3 years without succuming to the click of death, but all good things must come to an end. Its a 45GB 75GXP and I'll send it in for RMA since the warranty ends in Sept., but I would really like to get my information off of it.

I ran the IBM drive utility and it said I needed to flash the drive firmware. I attempted to update it, but the boot disk gave an error when checking the drive. I stuck the drive in the freezer for about 8 hrs and quickly tried to flash it, which actually worked. But the drive still doesn't work and the new firmware hasn't changed anything.

Any ideas on how to recover my data before I give up?

that would be optimal, but even when booting to dos the drive clicks and slows down to about a read a minute. programs think that the drive is just not responding because its so slow.

try loading windows on another drive and then slaving that drive off the one that works. my friend does that alot of times on drives that aren't working and it does do the trick alot of times when nothing else does work.

Hopefully this helps someone. My drive was still clicking even after a successful firmware upgrade. The drive utility provided by IBM says the drive had bad clusters so I tried to simply fix the cluster to recover some data, but that failed. So my last ditch effort was to do a low level format. Strangely enough after the format the drive works normal, so no need for RMA.

Maybe the low level format just marked the bad clusters so that you cannot see them anymore. Did you check the total number of clusters before and after the low level format?
