IBM Drive - Excessive Shock Error now - grrrr!!

I got my replacement IBM 40Gb drive on Friday and its working perfectly, see this thread.

When I ran the DFT on the new drive I also ran the DFT on my existing 27Gb IBM Drive which holds my main Win2K installation. I got a report stating the drive has an Excessive Shock error. I guess I can understand that - the machine gets moved around a fair bit but the drive has been and still is working perfectly - S.M.A.R.T. doesn't detect any errors or anything and there are no weird noises or anything.

Anyone else had this problem? I don't know if I should take the risk and continue using the drive or if I should replace it.

That sucks Mitzi.

Which drive did you get that error for? The new 40Gb one or the existing drive in your server?

Hiya Migroo,

The error was on the old 27Gb drive which was and still is working perfectly! I don't know what to do, its covered by accidental house insurance, so I got a feeling an accident is gonna happen REAL soon

Hard drive + Spilt mug of hot chocolate = dead drive!

Hiya Mitzi.

Sorry to hear that. I recently backed up a full 30 GB drive.. its not fun.

I'd say backup as soon as you can.

The problem, is deciding wether to use the drive until it fails (whereby you lose all the data that you havent got a recent backup of )
Can you send a drive back if it has a fault waiting to happen (but still works...)?

What did you use to do the backup - a big pile of CDRs?

I'm not too worried about data on the drive - its mostly the OS, applications and games which can all be reinstalled - I've already lost my archives when the 40Gb drive died 2 months ago

I think I can send the drive back but with an Excessive Shock error - surely all IBM are going to say is you've knocked the drive and damaged it yourself so we won't replace it

I prefer my hot chocolate idea better....

Yes I used a very big pile of CDRs... It took about 3 weeknights (I have a 4x burner, and I was playing Gran Turismo 3 at the same time, so I was distracted..)

You could send it back, but yes IBm will probably give the responce you did.

I'd be careful with the hot chocolate, although if you have accidental damage cover then...

I'm building a PC, the hard drive is on the floor, the dog comes running in and knocks over a certain, well placed mug of chocolate (perhaps beer is more believeable??)...

Thats some dedication!

Hehe, sneaky ah heck it should work, providing you DO actually have a dog...

Yes dedication, but I really didnt want to have to re-burn all my MP3s (yes honestly I have the original CD for most of my MP3s - just seem to listen to them on my PC more) and lose all my DivX films.

I also needed to backup things like My Documents (it was about 2.5 Gb!! ), My web site folder, WORK (very big...)

Good luck!

The most recent 75GXP I sent back gave that error. Which is probably bull, it's never been shocked when in my hands. I've seen failure messages wildly vary on 75GXPs. Everything from no error to excessive shock to drive mechanism failure to anything you want.

You don't even need an error code to send it back. I've sent back 5 of them without DFT codes, just reporting that they were losing massive amounts of blocks. Always gotten the replacement.

Got my replacement drive. Received it four working days after it arrived at their place. Pretty good turn around for me.
They sent me a new 60GXP as a replacement. Hopefully it's a good one.
