IBM HDs should I be worried?

My computer just suddenly rebooted for no reason and there were loud clicking noises upon restarting.. everything works fine, but I have 2 hard drives, and IBM 60GXP 60GB and 120GXP 80GB.. Should I be worried?

Run IBM HDD fitness test

i wouldn't even bother with the fitness test. i've had drives crash that looked fine on the test. i just told ibm, "the drive's messed up" and they replaced it.

If you have never give a thought to it, you would not be worried but since you're already posting here. You're worried and will panic if you read how many drive crashes are there.

BTW,

on there new HDDs, make sure you look at the warranty. Something about using them for extended periods (like overnight) will void it.

IBM recommends they be used for only 8 hours a day...

I heard it here. Look at Red Dawn's post at 4:19. He may be pissy, catankerous, etc at times, but he usually knows what he is talking about. Since no one denied it, I'm about 75% sure that it is true.

The cooling thing is just a cheep solution for a problem that shoulden't even be there in the first palace. Todays hard drives should not have to require a cooling device to operate normaly unless noted in the documentation that came with the drive. This is just a cheap out for IBM

oh, BTW, back up everything important and RMA that drive. Go out, buy a non IBM replacement, and then sell the RMA

Yes, there is a power on reccomendation. No, it won't void your warranty if you ignore it. IBM drives also do not cause cancer, blindness, or mad cow disease.

The amount of people who just spout things off while having no idea what they're talking about is scary.

Doesn't seem to settle the potential reliability issues, but it looks like IBM will still warranty the drives at least, even if they have been used "too much"
