IBM/Hitatchi or Western Digital??

Which hard drive is better and why? Let me know quick. Deals wont last long.

I have owned several of the Hitachi hard drives and they have been nothing if not reliable! They are fast and extremely quite. I cannot complain!

But you might need to update the firmware to get rid of the "meow" sound they like to make.
It isn't a bad thing, it makes the meowing sound when it's been idle for a while so the heads aren't left over the same spot.
But either way, the new firmware got rid of the noise.

western digital absolutely SUCKS now. if they didnt have the raptor drives, they'd be off doing really bad. hitachi is better, but seagate is the best.

This is the opposite of my experience. IBM was my favorite drive 2 years ago, but have encountered many problems since. And Hitachi's CS blows. I have sent the same 2 UlrtaStars back like 3 times each and have tried to no avail to get them to upgrade me. TCO on these drives includes annual shipping to RMA.

That's what that sound is? Damn, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was making that.

I've got 4 160GB Hitachi drives working together in a RAID 5 setup, plus a 5th one as additional storage (RAID card only supports 4 drives). They're not loud either; those, along with two of these aluminum fans make for a very quiet and well-cooled system. I'd post the link for them at Newegg, but their site must be undergoing maintenance or something; it's not loading very well at all, at least not on their regular site. Their secure site seems to be doing just fine though. The item number was 22-145-061.

Hitachi - lower cost/gigabyte, and in the reviews I have read, the Hitachis' are always the fastest hdds, ata or sata. Plus, they're very quiet. Definitely the Hitachi.
