IBM laying off half of IBM Global Services

When I started with IBM in 1980, they had a full employment practise and they stated they were not ever going to layoff any employee. They didn't guarantee that you wouldn't have to move to keep a job, but they basically guaranteed that you would always have a job. I left in 1991, but things have obviously changed for the worse with Big Blue.

This smells a bit funny. Anytime a company lays off over 10k people, it generally makes national news, at least for a few days. Even the more minor cases end up on knee-jerk shows like Lou Dobbs. And I haven't heard anything about this and although the OP's link addresses this, it seems a little fishy to me.

Still, what do 160k people do? That's a lot of people.

As a former IBM'er, and speaking with friends that are still with the company, I can confirm that they are quietly laying off about 30% global services. Right now, most of the people who were let go were consultants, so when they're all gone - they let go of regulars.

It has long been known within global services that internal contracts (that is, projects where IBM itself is the customer...infrastructure, internal s/w development, etc) are all flagged for offshoring. In the past, folks working on external contracts were somewhat safer. Middle management was more apt to overlook you if your project was bringing fresh dollars into the company. Looks like that's not going to be the case anymore if IBM willingly sheds existing external customers if the contracts aren't profitable-enough.

nobody in their right minds love lotus notes.

You would be surprised at how much the company I work for loves Lotus Notes and its tabbed windows.
