I'd just like to mention I went by what I phrase a "junk" computer store -- that is to say one that buys surplus stuff from all sorts of odd places and has items that are older than I am -- in the San Jose/San Fransisco Bay Area and they had some 1394 cards, also for $9.99. This place is supposed to have incredible deals on everything and from what I saw there that was the case, so as far as I'm concerned this is a good deal in my book.

Anyway, does anybody know if there are any firewire mice or keyboards? I know there are already USB mice and keyboards but I haven't seen any firewire stuff. Hell, what sorts of good firewire peripherals are out there aside from Digicams? I'm not too up to date on this stuff. :/

P.S. The place I went to is called "Weird Stuff" and it's in Santa Clara for any of you locals. It's worth a few hours browsing the old sections of the store just for nostalgia's sake alone.

I guess I'm sort of glad that I didn't see this deal and spent a few bucks more at Newegg. Mine works fine in XP.

i got the $12.99 one from computer123.com and am running it on windows XP with no issues. I dont believe I even needed to install any drivers either. It just detected, and I plugged my ipod in and voila, worked great.

Oh yeah, it does provide power to charge the ipod. $12.99 shipped, I couldnt be happier

Really? I wonder why there are so many defective ones then...
When I put mine in... power is provided to the ipod... but windows doesn't detect it....

I have two Firewire cards from compter123.com and they both work fine under Windows XP. I use them for DV transfer and a high speed network connections between two machines (I purchased a 15 foot cable).

Both cards were automatically detected by Windows XP and usable.

One card did fail. The symptom was that it would either not be detected by Windows XP at all, or would be recognised as an unknown IEEE1394 device and no driver loaded, but usually would simply hang Windows XP when it tried to load the driver. I swapped Firewire cards between the machines and confirmed it was definitely the card - it worked fine for the first 20 days.

I simply ordered another from computer123.com and they agreed to issue credit back as soon as they received the defective RMA - which they did.

All three cards worked right out of the box for me (at least at first). I have a 850e and KT266a based motherboards - I have all the latest XP patches loaded. Possibly that there are some defective cards in the batch they have (I wouldn't expect any QA for $13) or something else the cards don't like that is a hit or miss depending on system setup etc.

yup, mine detected as Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

No need to install any drives (i.e. use the provided install cd). I just installed it, rebooted, and all was dandy.

Same here. Got it in 7 days exactly. And the card didnt even bother to go thru the usual XP auto detect/install driver.

The thing just works. (If mine breaks in 3 months I will post back)

Just ordered the 12.99 card from computer123.com. I went to Fry's yesterday and all the IEEE1394 cards were $30 and up. So $12.99 + free shipping (+ cable) is a hot deal!

so has anyone who got the $12.99 card AND problems under windows xp manage to fix the problem since I noticed that on the site it says:

Digital Research 3 + 1 Port Firewire Card WIN98.ONLY
Includes 4 to 6 pin firewire cable. Texas Instrument Chipsets (TI Chipsets) WIN 98 ONLY all tech support issue about this product, please go to www.dr-tech.com

Please let me know because I'd love to get this card for windows xp ASAP if it has a workaround that doesn't involve too much headache.

I purchased two cards:-

IOG139552
IOGIOF3T

(Could not get direct links to work to www.computer123.com)

The first card ran ok for around 20 days under Windows XP and then started to hang the computer when loading the device driver. Swapped Firewire cards with the Dell PIV and the hang went to the Dell system. Computer123.com issued an RMA for the IOGIOF3T - I actually reordered the IOG139552 since this had proved to be more reliable.

Interestingly, I received another IOGIOF3T card since it has the TI chipset and looked like the one I had sent back. Not too worried, since this one worked and has been working for over a month now.

My recommendation would be to stick with the IOG139552 for $2 more for piece of mind. It also indicates XP support.

I wonder whether this could have been the reason why my 3rdG Ipod have the problem of dying after 2-3 hours of playing music.

Great price, i agree, but check the Belkin refurbs thread...it's got a firewire card for less, about 6.99 if i remember correctly. Shipped fast (though they say they cant guarantee shipping dates) and came with the firewire cable and internal connector, and random software.

They have a flat 7.50 shipping for whatever they can fit into a box, so if you want to add a $10 buck router or two, or $2.99 ethernet cards, that would probably work out to a better deal...

drat. I already got a belkin router, which is sweet btw. Do you know what chipset the Belkin uses since my firewire soundcard's a bit finicky about that. It prefers TI or Lucent. It spat on my VIA PCMCIA firewire adapter, so I'm looking for a PCI solution with a different chipset. Thanks.
