IBM R40 vs Dell D505

Looking for a laptop under $1000. So far, I looked at the IBM R40 and the Dell D505. My requirements are for a college notebook running business apps. No CD burning required or running games, though a good brand video card is a plus.

My biggest concern is weight, reliability, wireless, resale value, and battery life. I plan to use it for a year unless I go to graduate school which is a possibility if I can get funding.

I wasnt sure between the IBM R40 or the Dell D505, but noticed that the Dell had a Celeron M 1.2 Ghz processor and the IBM R40 had a regular Celeron 2.0Ghz processor, but now IBM has a free second battery option. So its a tight toss up. Is the IBM R40 all plasticly?

i'm in the same situation as you. it came down to the 600m and dell c-400. i think i am going with the c-400 because it costs $820 ($920 before rebate) shipped to me with a dvd burner, only weights 3.5 pounds, has wirless capabitlites, and over 3 hour battery life

as far as resale value, i dont know. it is a bit outdated as it uses a PIII 1.2 ghz mobile but hey, its only $800. i'm going to use it for the same purposes are you are and the way i figure, if a lappy can last me one more year of college and 3 more in law school for $800, its a pretty good deal

have you guys looked at hpshopping.com?
they have academic pricing, combine it with ebates adn you can get a pretty nice setup for about $1000. they did have an extra 10% coupon floating around at the beginning of march; not sure if they killed it early due to it getting on the net.

I just ordered an X1000 using all of the above for $1040 after rebate. maybe that's of interest to you

edit: just ran sandra and see that they put 2700 RAM in the Compaq when I paid for 2100. Darn it! They're making it hard for me to choose the T41........

980$ after rebates coupons shipping tax. I guess hot deal for me and warm deal for you. I wished I had an integrated firewire port though.

I just cancelled my D505 order and tried to config X1000. But I got $1243 before rebate (I did use the 10% coupon). How did you get that price?

Iplaced my order march 3, so the pricing may be a little different, but not much I thnk

start at ebates ( I forgot for my order )
go to hpshopping
(if necessary, register then ) login for the academic site
you'll see little green apples near the prices to indicate the discounts
use the 10% off at checkout
you can also get the MSFT G basestation free after rebate now I think. I didn't.
mine came to $1140-100 mail in rebate
for some reason, teh b/g card was cheaper than the b card but pushed back the ship date by 2 weeks


PS-- once you place an order at hpshopping,com YOU CANNOT CANCEL IT OR CHANGE IT, even if you make a mistake inthe config!!!!! I tried several times. You have to either refuse delivery or accept it and get an RMA #. learn from my mistake!
