isn't light supposed to be good for laptops?

I thought so.

While I love my Compaq's 15.0 SXGA display it's a bit hefty at 7.2 pounds.

One day I'd like to own a 12.1 or 13.3 weighing under 5 pounds, maybe an iBook with 12.1

Hi, Rossman. Does your Compaq have firewire ports? I remember you wanted firewire ports so well.

Yep my Compaq Presario 1500T has

TWO USB 2.0 ports
One FireWire
15.0 SXGA display
Floppy
DVD
ATI Radeon 7500 32MB

Not bad considering the price I paid around $800 (at least $600 below retail).

It's also a Celeron 1.4-M, a lot of people opted for the faster P4 but I wanted something cheap, low battery consumption, Mobile processor, and less heat so the Celeron-M was the natural choice for me.

Wow 3.6 pounds, that's like HALF the weight of mine.

Does the small 12.1 screen bother you?
I didn't get the built-in wireless. I have a USR 2410 (thanks to the HD forum) that I got about 5 months before getting the Thinkpad that I used in my HP Omnibook 600C (486/75 16MB, win95, 240mb hd) that I used to take notes and surf the net in class, hehe.

The screen size doesn't bother me at all. I still get 1024x768. The screen real-estate gets a little cramped when I've got a LOT of things open (but then that's why I should use virtual desktops =] ) The size is really nice, I don't mind carrying it anywhere.

The two downsides I've noticed are the video (the chipset ATI Mobility Radeon is fine, but there's only 8MB of VRAM.. not enough to play 3d games on the occasions I want to (this is mainly for school/everyday use... I have a desktop for real gaming) and lack of optical drive. Both of these I have easy workarounds for.

He was talking about the X22. It's a great little machine. I have a 5400rpm IBM 40GNX HD and 640MB of ram. running XP. Very speedy. Turning off virtual memory makes it even faster (Keep in mind that i have 640MB of memory.)

D@mn all these laptop deals. I am so tempted to get one, but don't need the debt, and don't have the cash now.

Yes you can. In fact there are investment clubs out there that take advantage of this to get its members started in DRIP investing. When you join the club, a member sells you one share of his/her stock that you want so you can get started buying shares in the company with much less cash than normal to get started and in return, you promise to sell one share to someone else in the club in the future with another stock once you've got a more established portfolio.

Oddly enough, my mom has a 12.1" iBook. I have a T40. My T40 is slightly lighter than the iBook.

Viper that's a damn good price for the T40 package. Especially when it include 3 years of accidental damage.

For those that do not have IBM Stock there is a simple solution. Buy 1 share under $100 order the T-40 and after receipt of the laptop you can do what you want with the stock, keep or sell. As a retiree it is a $100 cheaper for the stockholders than it is for me. My price is $1649.

Keep in mind that most Thinkpads are 15% off right now - that will expire shortly. The T40 is the #2 notebook at PC Magazine (X31 is #1) and #1 at PC World - I guess that is pretty good.

I ordered one from CDW, they are willing to pricematch the IBM.com price of $1682. ***NOT THE SHAREHOLDER PRICE***, which is a pretty good deal since IBM charges tax, and CDW doesn't for NY.

Actually, I heard from the forums that you can get a 20% discount from IBM.com if you tell them you're a first time buyer and it's for your business.

I just got this and I love it. SUper quiet and it barely gets warm. Wireless reception is awesome. It picked up more access points than my Orinoco Gold PCMCIA adapter.

Wow, that's pretty damn impressive since I thought Orinoco Gold was one of THE BEST WiFi cards on the consumer market.

I thought I would add this to the deal on IBM laptops although it does not apply to everyone. If you are a student, staff, or faculty at Harvard University, you can get a deal on IBM products. Here are a few laptops that I saw:

T40: Pentium M 1.5GHz, 512MB memory, 40GB hard drive, CDRW/DVD, 802.11b wireless, 32MB 7500 Mobility Radeon, 10/100 ethernet and modem, Windows XP PRO. $1493

T40: Pentium M 1.6GHz, 512MB memory, 80GB hard drive, CDRW/DVD, 802.11a/b wireless, Bluetooth, 32MB 9000 Mobility Radeon, Gigabit ethernet and modem, Windows XP PRO. $1888

X31: Pentium M 1.4GHz, 512MB memory, 40GB hard drive, 802.11a/b wireless, Bluetooth, 16MB Mobility Radeon, Gigabit ethernet and modem, Windows XP PRO. $1466

Go here to find out how to get these prices if you qualify. All have 3 yr warranty.
