Not a bad deal at all. For quite some time now, I have been thinking about acquireing a machine such as that and also grab a copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 with GPS adapter. I can then use it as my navigator inside the car

I have been reading about the Microsoft GPS adapter, and I kept wondering if it charges people any fee for access their GPS satellite.

no, there is no charge to use gps satellites. You just need a reciever and software. I have the reciever off of eBay. Came from like singapore. Works great and comes highly recommended. I use Routis 2004. Check out mp3car.com and the GPS forum.

Woot rocks.

I have to agree. What happens if you need to format and you don't have a disc? You are SOL.

If it comes with a license (which it must if it's preloaded), the discs are not hard to come by.

How about the vendor? I have never heard anything about them.

So would this be good enough for fast web surfing and outlook? Expanded memory of course. This is a great deal if so. also how heavy are these notebooks?

Interesting...

I enjoyed this comment from their "Woot?" link...

"We anticipate profitability by 2043 -- by then we should be retired; someone smarter might take over and jack up the prices."

Seems like a nice deal but be prepared to add more memory.

Thanks OP.

More than good enough for those two. I got mine over at the Microcenter when it was on sale for $449 - 100MIR - $100 MIR for Microcenter credit card sign up. It's a very good laptop. Currently mine has 192MB of RAM and WinXP installed. Runs perfectly fine for day to day stuff. I play Divx movies to my TV with it sometimes.

One word of caution, when I jumped in and got one of these refurbs, my initial one had a bunch of 'white spots'. Luckily Microcenter was a B&M store and I was able to do an exchange for a better and flawless one. I'm very happy with my T20 for $250.

Ok thanks for the info. That is all i really need it for, and the T series is absoutley the best out there in regards to build. I am looking for sealed on ebay now as well.

we used to distribute this exact model to everyone in our office a few years back. These things are TANKS (in terms of durability, not weight they are pretty decent in weight), only one did i ever have to repair, and that guy abused the hell out of it. Win2k license info is a sticker on the bottom, so as long as you have the media you are fine, also, IBM usually will give out their recovery disks (they dont give you a win2k disk with the new laptop to begin with, just a recovery disk, that adds all their crap). For the price, not bad ... but considder what $700 could buy you... Id pay $250 for this, thats about it

Excellent thread crap, I was pretty hot for one at 399, but once I heard about somebody getting one for $250, $399 seems too high.

What kicks it for me is the battery life and memory, and lack of USB 2.0. Its close but no banana, I would rather pay a bit more and get a system that doesn't already have one foot in the grave.

MS does not own a satellite yet.

Received this (for an in-law) and I think it is a nice little machine. Since getting a nice fully functional internet/word processing/e-mail laptop for $400 isn't something I see every day, seems like it was a good deal to me.

95% of people can't get a new T42 for that price since they don't have your academic discount. How does that even apply to the situation at hand?

Oh btw - two of my cousin's friends played for the Memphis Express - did you ever play them?

Nothing against yellowfiero, but how do you get an academic discount? I'm a second year college student.

Good luck - and a bump for ya.

I suppose either university is paying for the notebook via some grant program or whatnot, or they have a special academic program with IBM, otherwise there is no way you could get T42 for $600. Because if there was probably every student in the country had a shiny new T42.

This deal never involved an academic discount, other posters brought this up as another way to get a hot deal. HTH

You can't. The $600 price is impossible. Ed Discount is MAX at 20% off. Unless the MSRP on the T42 is only $720 (which it is NOT). Impossible to get at that price.
