Sorry WackyDan, you're misinformed.

Time will tell then won't it???

I'll put a wager that the T42P, announced in May, will have a 15" screen.

I've never paid much attention to the R series. So what you guys are saying is that the 15" model will be using the form/case of the R series, but it'll have the same alloy material as the T series correct? My main worry is the thickness of the laptop. How thick are the R series? I thought they were much thicker than the T series which is pretty close to 1".

Here's another link, from UCI with some info on the T42 14" specs. Looks like the 64mb 9600 Radeon will be used. http://www.book.uci.edu/bookstore/computer/ibm/notebooks/Tseries.html

I don't expect a widescreen anytime soon, even next year, when I made that first post. I just have a lot of respect for the Thinkpads, and I would really hate to go over to the Powerbooks just because of screen real estate. I do a lot of graphics work and am used to double or triple screens when working with my desktop. I'll be traveling aboard later this year and will have to buy a new laptop... as of now it looks like I'll be buying a Thinkpad, regardless of the wide screen.

However, as of now, I'm thinking I could save a lot or some money should the T41 series go on clearance because of the introduction of the T42. I'm not sure what the differences will be between the two, but as long as the harddrive spins fast enough (5400rpm should be fine I guess) and I get a great video card, I think I'll be satisfied.

yes it will be warmer and use more heat (1.25w for dothan vs 1.0w for banias)

What? I'm confused now.. xbitlabs reported that the dothan will "contain 140 million of transistors and will devour about 21W of power", which "is lower compared to today?s high-end Pentium M by about 3.5W"

I think it's becoming an everybody is half right scenario.

If they put a T model in an R chassis but use the titanium/magnesium composite..... It's still an R chassis a deviates significantly from what the T series has come to represent. Maybe they are trying to simplify the model lineup between the t41p and r50p and just merge that offering.

Huh? for T42 from? Yes.. there will be a T42p model..... How quickly it will be available as compared to just a t42 is open to speculation.

As far as where I'm getting my T42 from which may your question.... I'll have it soon after announce. Not sure what my specs will be as Somebody else makes that decision for me. I'm running a t41p now and will hate dropping down from 1400x1050 to 1024x768 like I did when I went from my A31 to my T40.

I really don't think we'll be getting any T42p's anyway. Only got two T41p's into inventory last time. Every six months we get new one's which is more a pain in the *ss than you can imagine.

They go back to IBM as we don't own them, IBM does - then they go to refurb and out to the catalogers. Hard to explain the hows or whys but we aren't leasing.

I have been waiting to order a ThinkPad forever, like a year. Now I think the Dothan is what I have been waiting for plus I need one now because of college. I don't mind spending a lot but I want to know how much longer it will be, May 20, 30, June, what? And when I order it will I have to send it back because something is wrong with it like all of my friends have had to do with assorted manufacturers?

It is required that I have a DVD+-RW will the T42 have an internal multiburner option?

Thanks

Well, I guess I am just one of a growing crowd.
I also was just about set on ordering a T41p, but now I feel that I have to wait to see the T42p pricing next week. So, other than Dothan it will have a DVD burner??
I had a T41p spec'ed out for just over $3,000, we can expect these 42p's to be more??
Also, I don't suppose there is any chance of getting a FireGL card and a screen with resolution below 1400X1050?? For my eyes 1400X1050 just makes fonts pretty darned small!! Do these screens "scale well" back to 1024X748 for text use??
Also, are there any cases that are made for these 14" notebooks (i.e. that a 15.1" or 15.4" won't fit into). I would like a quality case for carrying around a T41p or T42p that is only as large as necessary. I would not be carrying extra "junk" in it.
Thanks!

I am one of the growing crowd waiting for the T42p announcement, but I am a little concerned.
What do you think the chances of them "cheaping out" with any of the components of the T42 (compared to the T41)???
I would really hate to wait for new improvements and get a "downgrade" in quality.

Expect the pricing of the t42p to be at least as high as when the t41p came out. That would mean around $3,500 as the lowest possible debut price.

Since they both use the same firegl t2 card, don't expect much a performance difference in video processing applications between the t41p and the t42p.

As far as "cheaping out" goes, I'm not sure if this statement can be applied to the higher end of the t-series, but it certainly does apply to the lower end (that is to be expected, you do get what you pay for, and that goes for everything else).

Check out
The Brain Cell by Tom Bihn. If you click on the Fitlist icon, you'll see that the size 3 fits the T41 with very little extra.

The only way to get the xga resolution on a firegl card is to replace the screen on the t41p with one that's xga...

If your concerned about small fonts/icons, these things are easily adjustable in the display properties.

I hope this comes out soon, then it'll lower the prices on the t40 and t41.

seeing that the dothan chip produces more heat. what will the extra cache help in?

if dothan has 1mb cache, what does a banias have?

You sure it has more heat since Intel has comfirmed that Dothan uses less power than Banias.

according to aakerman, he stated "it will be warmer and use more heat (1.25w for dothan vs 1.0w for banias)"
