Haha don't count too much on me.. those numbers are pretty old - but I do distinctly reading 1.0w and 1.25w for the banias and the dothan, respectively. My 1.7ghz banias uses around 8 watts idle and lcd off - that number includes harddrive, ram, usb connections etc etc.. so 1w idle doesn't sound too unrealistic.

I find it very interesting that the dothan will use LESS battery now, according to xbit labs - this goes against all official as well as unofficial announcements I've read - but xbit labs are usually on target, so trust them instead

Can anyone comment on the difference between the ATI FireGL T2 card in the new T42 and the Mobility Radeon 9000 in the old T41? Is the FireGL card better or worse for gaming?

When do they go on sale??
Dothans come out tomorrow, so IBM should have them ready by the end of may?

Ok..that's what I thought anyway.
Hopefully i'll be able to get the T42 non-p (p's too expensive). As long as I can get the price for the laptop to be under $3000, I think i'll be able to get my parents to buy it for me.

Alviso will provide a 533MHz effective bit rate frontside bus. There's dual-channel DDR 2 SDRAM support in the mix, too - up to 2GB of it - along with the next, third version of Intel's integrated Extreme Graphics, with its dual-display capability and TV out.

Alviso features Intel's High Definition Audio sub-system, formerly known as 'Azalia', which is built into the ICH6-M South Bridge. As revealed last year, it also provides Serial ATA and Gigabit Ethernet support, along with room to cope with up to eight USB 2.0 ports and four PCI Express ports, primarily for ExpressCard devices.

It's also supposed to have support for some power saving technology for displays, but I don't know much about that

edit: This is for ziplux! I used the quote function, but it's out of order apparantly =(

I have a FireGL T2.

It's actually, physically exactly the same as a mobility 9600. The difference is, that it's
certified (probably tested?) for professional use - ie. CAD/3D applications and such. It also
gives you the ability to install ATIs special drivers, made for a variety of professional applications,
that gives you better performance and stability under these applications.

So if you wanna compare the fireGL t2 to the mobility 9000, just search for 9600 vs 9000 comparisons.

As I've had both, I can tell you, that the 9000 gets around 7000 3dmarks(01), and the 9600 gets 9050 3dmarks(01).

In Aquamark I get 19900 points, and in 3dmark03 I get 2550.

Hmmmm 3g's for the none P... so expensive. Almost makes me want to get a Powerbook since it costs less and has a wide screen.

Any word on when the new 533mhz FSB Pentium Ms will come out?(Before late July??)...Sometimes I just wish they would stop making new CPUs for a year or so, so we can savor them for once.

aakerman, thanks for the info about the FireGL card.

I was planing to buy a T41, but do you think it would be better to wait to buy it for a week or so as IBM might lower their prices on the T41 series after the T42 series starts shipping?

I thinking about getting a T42 because of it's 5 hour battery life, 15" screen, and build quality. Is there anything else I should consider?

What is the "airbag" protection?

I am going to use the laptop for on the road MS Office appls, internet, email, and playing movie and music files.

Thanks

Put my order in for a T42p with a 15" display today. The rep told me there is a 25 day lead time but my order confirmation states that it will be shipping on the 15th of May. I can only hope.

So what happened to all the T42 models on the website? Yesterday there were
a lot of t42 models, now many of them are gone... I really wanted the
1.7ghz 14" 1400x1000, but today it's not listed. I hope they don't cancel my order!
