Ok I just purchased the IBM Thinkpad T42 and here are the specs: Intel Centrino 1.7GHZ (With Intel Pro 2200 wireless card) Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB Video, 512MB Ram (Plan to buy more ram at frys), 60GB 7200 RPM drive instead of 30GB 4200rpm or 80GB 5400rpm, Windows XP Pro (Duh), CDRW/DVD combo drive, Li-Ion High Capacity Battery and ya. Please let me know if this was a good purchase, how much ram I should get for this system and how long this should likely last me +any other comments.
Thanks!

Edit: Oh I forgot, It was $2,369.05, but with tax it totaled at: $2,564.51 DAMN TAX!
Edit2: Ok so I bought more ram at frys (512MB) and it turns out the system ram in there already is on 1 Stick and not 2 so that means this addition should work nicely (Adding up to 1GB). Oh and Here is the link to the laptop: http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_2379DXU

What's the max memory you can put in T42? What about R51?

And IBM charges tax for online sales? Shitto! :|

I think you could've gotten it cheaper through the IBM Employee discount or the Discover card discount.

Well acutally I was thinking I could *still cancel the order and just reorder it but this time as a student. They have a student model that normally costs $2500 but it being sold for $1800. I'm a part time student/I have a job to pay the bills. I don't know about the Discover card discount, if the discover card discount is just as cheap and will let me cusomize the lappy then please post a link.

Edit: Oh yea, the Max memory you can put in a T42 is 2GB. Lol if you were to buy memory through them, it would cost me an additional $1K for 2Gb of ram. I choose 256MB because I found a stick of cosiar XMS 512MB for like $100 at frysoutpost (Essentially I could get 1GB later for $200). Here is the link: http://shop4.outpost.com/product/3895227

Lol the Corsiar is cheaper than the Patriot or Geil.

Yes, DEFINITELY re-order as a student. Check out your university's bookstore also, they might have a deal. Contact IBM directly (find their student website section and there is a phone #) and see what they can do. 'Cuz you definitely didn't do a good deal. Good machine, but you paid a lot
Check out my sig for my T42, but I paid $2000 after tax w/3 year Depot warranty & thinkpad protection

The one in your sig is not bad at all. Did you order direct from IBM or through your school's bookstore? And how much was the difference between student vs. regular price?

Yea so I changed the order and it turns out it wasnt $1800 but $2100. Its a lot better though because I got a 6Cell Li-ion battery (not as good but I got to buy an additional 9Cell Li-ion battery with $100 off), 3 yr warranty(base other wise) and 512MB of ram. The School sold out of the one I wanted and only had the Thinkpad X and G series which I didn't want. So yea I was able to get the student discount but I had to call quickly and apparently the website education link is only for schools. It was wierd because they said I might need your school ID and I was like ok.. So we go through the process, I choose what I wanted and then she never bothers to ask.

Here is the link on the site to how much $ this particular model the lady told me (with all this stuff) would NORMALLY cost http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_2379DXU and it was $2400 (not including tax) and the original model link: http://d02xms004.southbury.ibm...;session_id=1758552704 I choose was $2200 (not including tax) but when I got the student discount, the New model was $100 cheaper than the one I choose. She told me it totaled to about $2200 and I *think it includes tax so it's really good that I got the student discount. Not only do I get a better machine with a 3 yr warranty (instead of base), 2 batteries 1 6cell included and 1 9Cell 100$ off and 512MB ram. It's all good.

Do you know if IBM has any financing available?

They do have a monthly rate I think it was like $88/mo for that 2K machine (it varies) but thats all I know of, I think all computer companies have some sort of a financing scheme.

Awesome, I got the laptop and I am typing on it right now! I gotta say this is a sweet laptop, it lighter than my sony vaio and it is way more feature packed. I just read a post about the Mobility Radeon 9700 is just an OC'ed 9600, is there any way I can confirm this like any articles or info about OC'ing this thing. Are there any serious risks to OC'ing opposed to OC'ing with a desktop machine?
