This is exactly the laptop I wanted! I resisted the T41 deal, but had to get this to replace my ancient 560X.

I think I need to take a vacation from this forum before I spend all my money

My wife is still happy with her 390X--don't see a reason for upgrade yet

Yes. My experience has been that IBM warranties are tied to the machine through the serial number, so any subsequent owner will be able to call and get service within the warranty period.

I hate you!!! all of you!!!. I bought one too. I thought the deal was HOT, I was debating for 4 days if I should buy this or not. I finally gave in. Man.. I still think it was a little bit expensive after tax. However I am going to sell the UltraBase and CDRW, cause I dont actually need it. I wonder how much money I can get for those things.

I remember 2 years ago, I bought a Compaq Evo N400C, that was just an AWESOME laptop for 850 dollars. I gave the laptop to my sister and I need one so bad.

I turned to IBM after having to return two Inspiron 600m's because they were getting very hot (yes, I am talking about temperature).

After much internal debate between X31 and iBook G4, I finally placed an order with PCConnection.com for a base model of X31 for $1099. Yes, it is not "centrino"--no built in wireless--and doesn't come with a CD-RW drive. Since I already have an external USB CD-RW drive, I won't miss not having a CD-RW drive on X31. Wireless PCMCIA cards are so cheap, I can get a decent one for about $10 at Fry's on a good day.

Oh, yes, I will be running some form of Unix (either RedHat or FreeBSD) on it. That's one of the reasons why I was even considering iBook G4, which runs Mac OS X.3--a FreeBSD variant. The other main reasons being the size of my budget and the size of the laptop itself. After reading the excitement on this forum (and elsewhere) about X31, I am glad I placed an order for an X31 without succumbing to the cute iBook. I now think X31 is just as cute! And, vastly useful for my needs.

how did you get an X31 for $1099 at PCConnection.com? The cheapest I saw was $1499.

The cheapest generic centrino notebook loaded similar to X31 and 14" screen is $1269.00 over there. Getting a brand-name unit for only $5.15 extra is hot, agreed!
yes basically it's a really small kickass laptop from a company with great support btw is it just me or do none of the x series laptops have integrated bluetooth?

Yes, they do. Only the three most expensive models (all have 1.6, 512MB, 40GB 5400rpm,BT etc. - they only differ in wireless options). I "had" to get one with BT so I had to spend almost twice as much as this deal (might have to return it for this though). Check out the "literature" section on the IBM website to get a PDF with a complete list of models in every IBM range and the features they have.

There are a couple of models that have built in bluetooth. Models 2672-REU and 2672-RHU

hello,

i have a question. this is what i got from their specs.

System memory
Memory (RAM) std/max[8] 256MB / 2GB
RAM slots total 2 SODIMM
RAM slots available 1 SODIMM
Memory speed 266 MHz
RAM type DDR SDRAM
Module specifications PC2700

according to this, the memory speed is 266mhz yet the moduel specifications is pc2700. Do you know if the memory speed can/will run at 333mhz?

why would they ship with pc2700 if it only runs at 266mhz. it's it better for them to ship with the pc2100 if that was the case?

thanks,
Seung

Where do you see it for 1274?

I was $1274+tax; they raised the price. OP should change the title to reflect this.

lemme tell you posters who keep bringing up dell laptops. i've had pretty good experience with dell customer care, they mostly took care of me, next day service etc. (i had 3 years next day onsite service).

but i had to use the service quite a bit, a bit more than i wanted too. i have my laptop exactly 3 years and 4 months. guess what, it's been sitting in my room for 4 months, because the warranty ran out. the quality sucks. even from the first few months of having it after the novelty run out, the quality reeks. dells are plain cheap and poorly built. newer ones as well, my buddy has the newest subnote and it is a bit sturdier, but not much.

IBMs on the other hand, kick ass in build quality. got 3 oldies here, ancient, they have pentium 233's in them, adn they are more solid then my dell laptops. running strong as a matter of fact, with out a creak or crack in sight.

all i recommend are IBM laptops from now on.

Yeah, I second that on the quality of dell laptops. Dell seems to be more into profits than quality. I hate to admit it, but I just got an Apple Powerbook 12" on amazon for 1085 or so including the isight and when I opened the box, the laptop has quality all around. The whole entire case is made out of aluminum and is pretty resistant to bending unlike traditional plastic laptops. I'm happy with the purchase, and would have gotten the x31 for $1274.15 but with tax it would have made it cost $300 more than a powerbook, which is a lot for me. Good luck to everyone who got in on this deal. I've always wanted a Powerbook and finally got one.

I hear they're quite subborn about returns because of bad pixels... I've heard the number 6 thrown around recently... but four or so years ago, I once received one with close to 12 and they gave me a very hard time about it. I feel that a screen with even one dead pixel should not be let out of the factory without selling it at a discount as a defect.

I also got mine today. It came yesterday, but I was in the shower when UPS stopped by and it is one of those packages that you need to sign in person to receive. I opened the package and found that there was no ultrabase or CD drive:|. I called IBM and they said it will ship separately on the 8th...
