If you do the math and checkout the specs on the the JS20 it sounds like these systems will be 2.2GHz 970fx powered.

It's a box. Didn't get to do anything too fun with it but see the inards of the thing. Same server tower box that they've been dropping Intellistations ( which is what it is ) into for some time now. This one had duals.

Yeah I know that. And my point was, although perhaps not easily understood, that you can't recompile applications when you don't have the source code for them. You need the application vendor to support the platform. And so far for IA64 there have been alot of promises but fewer results for Workstation type applications. They have good support for server apps but workstation apps leave lots to be desired so far.

the problem is that application vendors are also fairly slow in porting their applications to x86-64 as well. for my needs i'd be pretty happy with anything. hell, i just got a free 486 laptop that's being put to good use.

Which means opterons have an upperhand because they support the current plethora of x86-32 software now, and will have future support for x86-64 when they are finally ported.
