Kudos to techbargains, plus I searched and did not see this here.

The new 40GNX series of IBM TravelStar hard drives for laptops has started plummeting in price. These drives spin at 5400 RPM and have an 8 MB cache (!).

Just last week I bought a 40 GB from Googlegear for $192 shipped. One week later it has dropped almost $35!

IBM TravelStar 40GB 2.5in EIDE 5400 rpm for $158

googlegear.com lowered its price on the IBM Travelstar 40GNX 40GB 2.5-inch EIDE UltraATA/5 5400 rpm hard drive for notebook computers, model no. 07N9482, to $157.99. FedEx 2nd-day is 50 cents.

I just installed this in my ThinkPad A30 and have observed a substantial increase in performance. This drive rocks!

Well, for those who like cache, Toshibia has a 16mb cache laptop drive.....upto 60gb capacity.

Anyhow, here's a nice review on all the top contenders in laptop drive. It's not great, but the only decent one I've seen out there.

Here's the LINK.

Also, try using www.pricewatch.com in addition to techbargains.com. These drives have been listed for weeks now on there.

As a result, I ordered about twenty 20gb drives, and about six 40gb drives for my company.......much nicer than the standard 4gb drives people have been using. Too bad googlegear doesn't take PO's.....so I used my personal credit card (cash back...hehehee).

*bump*

"A GREAT review....It's not great..." Huh?

And who's the winner in the Barefeats review? IBM TravelStar 40GNX!

And what's the price of the 40 GB Toshiba drive at Trans Intl? $215 (Not hot) :frown:

Wow thats a very impressive deal I purchased my Toshiba 4200RPM 30gb notebook drive for that about 6 months ago. Very very tempting but I think I will keep what I got and go for more battery life.

They seem to be back in stock now.

Are these things pretty much universally compatible with recent notebooks? I know notebooks used to be dramatically more proprietary than desktops, and am still a wee bit leary. I'm helping a friend with a Sony Vaio F540K, and I don't want to get him something that won't work. No documentation available so far as changing the hard drive goes, but it seems like it should indeed be a simple operation--but sometimes appearances are deceiving. This time?

The F540K can work with some other IBM and Toshiba drives, so I'm presuming this one would work fine too. Anyone know any reason to suspect otherwise?

Thanks.

SteveO, at least post something useful and try and get a life. What was the purpose of that flame? Sheesh.

I didn't say the Toshiba was faster or cheaper, just some people may benifit from 16mb cache. Also, I clearly mentioned that I ordered the IBM drives, not the Toshiba. Oh yes, the Toshibia is available in 60GB and is faster than the "old" 12.5mm IBM 60GB drive.

Price increase to $163... But still HOT compared to other seller.

Now, Anyone tried this drive yet? What do you think of it?
I hope it's not as bad as its Desktop well-known "DeathStar" cousin.
I ship my Deskstar back and forth to IBM 5 times!! Asking for replacement, due to mechanical error.
