so many misinformed posts by Mac haters here..."omg its so slow" BS

Why do you hate mac's if it works perfectly for you?

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I don't think the performance justifies the price premium

Performance isn't everything. Form over function may be higher in priority for many.

The resale value for Apple laptops is ridciulously superior to that of PC laptops. That alone is why I would buy an Apple laptop over a PC laptop.

Well you are obviously just a mac hatter because I have a Powerbook, love it, and it is plenty fast.

I love my powerbook. paid $1600 after edu discounts though, that hurts, but it was worth every penny.

would have bought a powerbook, but i just decided to get a 14 in ibook. i got it with the super drive and what not, and it was still cheaper than the power book i wanted. either way i'm a pretty satisfied fetcher with my mac. i'll never go back to pc.

et cedera, et cedera. Nowadays, I'm sure these differences mean little to most people, but I needed the extra VRAM when I bought it, so I'm glad I did. I like the Aluminum casing much more over the white iBook (looks more professional, in my opinion). Aestethics are far from the reason why I decided PB over iBook, though. Just depends what you need.

I bought mine about a year ago, though. I recommend AppleCare or Safeware insurance as well.

Does the PB and it's Aluminum casing make it too warm to keep on ones lap?

Like other laptops, it does get hot. If I remember correctly, the iBook (not sure about the powerbook) dispurse most of their heat from the keyboards -- hence why it's dangerous to operate them with a closed lid (accomplished by kernel hax). The Powerbooks are able to operate in closed-lid mode when attached to an external monitor, because the heat is dispursed through the aluminum body.

Like I said -- they do get hot, but mine's never been so hot I couldn't put it on my lap. I'm sure if you were running it at full load (100% CPU), it would probably be uncomfortable -- but my friend's Dell laptop is the same way I found after using it for a week.

I've had mine for a year now, and use it heavily, and it's never gone into thermal shutdown or anything, but a couple times it was uncomfortable to use on my lap (I'm talking 2-3+ hours constant usage).

what I meant was the price premium of the PowerBook vs. the iBook. I think I'm going to go for the iBook.

Yeah, I'm also looking into buying an Apple laptop soon, waiting to see what happens in September with the powerbooks. I read on macrumors that the 12" model might be dropped

Anyway, I generally think that at this point the iBooks have practically caught up with the powerbooks as far as features and performance. I just wonder if the supposedly superior build quality of the powerbooks is worth the price premium... by the way, I thought iBooks were supposed to be pretty durable, with the polycarbonate plastic and whatnot. Are powerbooks more durable? If so, I could justify the extra $$$ :-D

seriously...I love me little PB. I have a PC desktop for games.

Honestly, what kind of retard wants a laptop as a primary gaming machine? Maybe if you were always on the go...but even then that would imply you being too busy to really do any gaming. Maybe a student? but really, you should be studying and humping girls, not playing games.

Regardless, OSX is a beautiful thing...the G4 and hardware on the PB work wonderfully with Tiger. Better than poopy dell, toshiba, sony, acer, fuji, etc...

meh, the latest dell XPS looks sweet and packs a 6800 Ultra Go under the hood that is at least as fast as it's desktop counterpark...while not weighing a billion tons (thanks to it's beefy Dothan ...i know what i'd buy

I appreciate the looks and build quality of the powerbooks, but the actual hardware and OS just suck too hard...IMHO

And i would only buy a lappy as a replacement for my desktop, so it would have to be a gaming king too.

 (although I'll still probably never buy one because a "good" laptop that's at least comparable to my current desktop, would cost more than I paid for my car...)
